This project offers a fun and easy variation on the traditional afghan. For one thing, it is square, not rectangular. For another, it is not full-body size. But as anyone who has ever knit a blanket can attest, it doesn't have to be full length to keep you cozy and warm!

Finished size:
About 48 inches wide and 48 inches long

Materials:
• Drops Symphonie (65% Merino wool, 35% nylon; 50 g = 76 yds): 25 balls one color; shown in 02
• Size 9 circular needle, 32 inches long, or size needed to obtain gauge
• Stitch markers (locking ring markers suggested)
• Yarn needle

Gauge:
8 stitches and 13 rows per 2 inches over both stocking or stockinette stitch and seed stitch

Notes:
You should place a ring marker at each st pattern change (i.e., between each seed and stocking or stockinette stitch section across a row). This will keep you from having to count the stitches all the time. Locking ring markers are recommended because they can be moved without having to be at that place in the row. So when you finish one section, you can move the markers before starting the second section. You can also use the locking markers to help count rows by putting a marker in an edge st every 10 or 15 rows.

TO MAKE:
Cast on 192 stitches. Work each of the following sections for 4 inches each (ending after a wrong side row) starting with section 1 and working to section 6. Then work all 6 sections in reverse order for 4 inches each, starting with section 6 and working back to section 1. After finishing the last section, bind off all stitches. Using a yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.

You may get a different row gauge over the two different stitch patterns. This means that you might knit fewer rows of stocking or stockinette stitch to get 4 inches than you will of seed stitch to get the same length. Row gauge does vary from person to person, so you may find that this is not an issue for you.

Section 1: Work across all stitches in seed stitch.
Section 2: Work 16 seed stitch, 160 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch.

In other words:
Row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times, knit 160, (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times.
Row 2: (purl 1, knit 1) 8 times, purl 160, (purl 1, knit 1) 8 times.

Section 3: Work 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 128 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch.

In other words:
Row 1: (knit1, purl 1) 8 times, knit 16, (knit 1, purl 1) 64 times, knit 16, (knit 1, purl 1).
Row 2: (purl 1, knit 1) 8 times, purl 16, (purl 1, knit 1) 64 times, P16, (purl 1, knit 1) 8 times.

Section 4: Work 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch, 96 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch.

In other words:
Row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times, knit 16, (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times, knit 96, (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times, knit 16, (knit 1, purl 1) 8 times.
Row 2: (P1, K1) 8 times, P16, (P1, K1) 8 times, P96, (P1, K1) 8 times, P16, (P1, K1) 8 times.

Section 5: Work 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 64 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch, 16 stocking or stockinette stitch, 16 seed stitch.

In other words:
