cheesiest cheese and macaroni
Please put on your apron and wash your hands.  Preheat the oven to 350°F

Ingredients:
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 cups water
2 cups dry macaroni

2 tablespoons bread crumbs
2 tablespoons butter, cut into tiny pieces

Equipment:
Large bowl
Measuring cups and spoons
Wooden spoon
Large pot
Colander
Large baking dish (9 by 12 inches)

Directions

1.  In the large bowl, combine all the cheeses and stir until they’re well mixed.
2.  Add the cream, milk, and salt to the cheese. Mix well.
3.  In the large pot, boil the water, then add the macaroni and cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the macaroni in the colander. *
4.  Add the macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir well to coat.
5.  Pour the mixture into the large baking dish, sprinkle with the bread crumbs, and dot all over with the butter.
6.  Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pasta is bubbly. *

* An adult helper should handle this step.

  • Thomas Jefferson, the third president, served macaroni and cheese at the White House in 1802. He brought the nation’s first macaroni-making equipment home from France!
  • The word macaroni is thought to come from the Sicilian word maccaruni, which means “made into a dough by force.

Serving Suggestion

For individual servings, divide the macaroni into small, oven-safe dishes. Bake for 10 minutes (until bubbly) and serve.

Try It This Way!

  • Try adding chopped vegetables or bits of ham to your macaroni and cheese. Bake as usual.
  • Pizza Mac and Cheese can be a real treat. To make it, use 2 cups of mozzarella cheese and no Cheddar. Add 1 cup of tomato sauce and your favorite pizza toppings. Then bake as usual.
