From the book

“Gather yourself to wake with him at dawn. . . [he begins slowly] . . . Then, suddenly, he shifts gears, accelerating to a pace of thirty or more songs per minute . . .”

“Listen to the dawn singing by this pewee. He has three different songs that he sings. The pee-ah-wee rises on the pee, falls on the ah, and rises again on the wee, as if he asks a question. The wee-oo rises on the wee and falls on the oo, as if he answers the question. Those two daytime songs are supplemented here with a third song used at dawn, the ah-di-dee. Try to keep pace with this flycatcher, identifying all of the songs in this three-minute sequence. Here’s a small help to get you started: the first four songs are ah-di-dee, pee-ah-wee, ah-di-dee, and wee-oo.”
