I promised myself that I would not talk up food topics that are clearly local to San Francisco when writing for this blog. In this case, though, I simply can’t help it. On a recent Saturday, beautiful, hot, sunny (believe me, we don’t get a lot of these), I stopped into Bi-Rite Creamery in the Mission. I’d heard their ice cream was pretty great, so I thought I would try it. I don’t care where you live, go to San Francisco and get your butt over there (It’s on 18th between Dolores and Guerrero)—you’ll thank me I promise you.

I ordered a scoop each of Chai Milk Chocolate and the much-talked-about Salted Caramel flavors (In fact, Salted Caramel has become so popular that my friend was unable to sample it—sold out). I took a quick taste. I’ve always disliked the term “to die for.” How many things does anyone truly want to die for? This, however, may be one of them. The sweet and salty flavors of the Salted Caramel were intoxicating (the Chai Milk Chocolate is pretty darn good too).

Slightly irritated excuse-me’s penetrated my brain—I’d stopped dead in my tracks, a spoon dangling from my mouth. I quickly turned around to leave and was confronted by a table full of cookbooks they were selling—all published by Chronicle Books.

This may not have been the best day of my life, but it comes pretty close. Bi-Rite Creamery, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
