On Monday I had a Carrie Bradshaw-esque day. It began with a taxi ride to the seriously gorgeous C&C television studio in Midtown Manhattan to partner up with Jamba Juice for their Free Breakfast Day and 21-Day Challenge satellite media tour. I got my hair and makeup done while sipping on some green tea and continued to have touch-ups all throughout the day so I was always camera-ready. There were healthy snacks and water on hand, a super luxe lounge where I could go and relax between takes, and a fabulous media coach on hand to guide me through the interviews. A girl could get used to this!
Now you may be thinking, what does Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous have in common with Jamba Juice? The answer is simple: Breakfast! Quite simply, most of us do not make the time to cook our breakfasts, and when we do grab something on the go, we don’t always choose wisely. So Jamba Juice decided to take matters into their own hands and revamp their breakfast menu to help create a nation of morning people. They gave away over 650,000 free breakfasts on April 8th to inspire and simplify healthful living for folks just like you. (Hey I’d do it myself, but there’s one of me and a nation’s worth of them.) And they hired me as their spokesperson to tell the country all about it.
Now I have to admit I was a little gun-shy at first because I am super-picky about what companies I will endorse. I hemmed and hawed and grilled everyone like crazy about what expectations would be made from me. Everyone was super-accommodating, so I decided to take the plunge. Once I got to the TV studio, the biggest surprise of all happened … my book, my precious Pink Bible, was prominently displayed on the set, and shared significant amounts of air-time with Jamba Juice. In fact, it was cross-promoted on every television and radio segment. I’m not just talking a quick fly-by mention, here—no. It blew away any expectations from the day that I had from the get-go.
As an author it’s hard to know what PR opportunities will pay off, but you have to keep putting yourself out there. Example: Chronicle generously sent me up to Montreal in March for a book promo event at the W Hotel, and we were socked with the season’s biggest whiteout blizzard! (Despite this, we still had a 50% attendance that night—God bless those hearty Canadians!) You just never know where life (and PR) will take you. Follow the hot pink brick road … until the next event, anyway.
