From the Design Desk: With Africa in Mind
Billions of people around the world are currently tuning in to “football” stations broadcasting from throughout South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. Despite the incessant and unnerving buzzing of the vuvuzelas, there’s much excitement over South Africa’s contributions to the World Cup, such as the music, food, and dance. Africa is in the air like World Cup fever, so we thought we’d dig up some visual design inspiration, like these vintage posters from GrainEdit below:
From Chronicle’s book room, I’m a huge fan of The Journey is the Destination, which is by and large a re-creation of the hyper-visual journals of a young photojournalist, Dan Eldon, who was tragically killed in Somalia. The Journey is a mixture of photos, paint, writing, and amazing ephemera capturing Dan’s caring, optimistic spirit on his travels in Africa. On This Earth, Water Is Key and Angaza Afrika (African Art Now) are also worth mentioning as they are packed with amazing images.
Short of making a trip to Africa itself, we can try to get a sense of its visual landscapes online and in books and a little bit by watching World Cup 2010. Go, Africa!
