Check out the helpful slow cooker cooking tips chart below, courtesy of Andrew Schloss, author of the new Art of the Slow Cooker App for iPhone (and the cookbook it’s based on). This new app has arrived just in time for making holiday and wintertime cooking delicious, comforting, and easy for when you’re on the go.

Slow Cooking By Ingredient
Slow cookers are almost always used to cook recipes that combine a variety of ingredients, so it is a bit difficult to talk about the specific needs of particular ingredients during slow cooking. Yet I always find it helpful to understand the affinities and tolerances of ingredients when figuring out how best to cook them. The following table will give you an overview of how to slow cook various ingredients, with the caveat that you will probably never cook any of them alone. As a result, recipes including these ingredients will probably reflect a compromise that accommodates the needs of all of the ingredients in the recipe.

Pumpkin Soup
Serves 8

2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 oz thinly sliced prosciutto, cut into thin strips
1 large onion, cut into 1⁄8-in dice
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (about 28 oz) 100% pure pumpkin
2 qts vegetable or chicken broth
1⁄8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp ground white pepper
1/2 cup cream (at least 10% fat)
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
2 tbsp chopped fresh Italian (flat-leaf) parsley

1. Heat the oil in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the prosciutto and sauté until crisp and frizzled, about 1 minute. Remove with a slotted spoon and reserve.

2. Reduce the heat to medium, add the onion to the skillet, and sauté until tender (do not brown), about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a few seconds, until aromatic. Stir in the pumpkin, broth, nutmeg, salt, and pepper and bring to a boil. Transfer to a 5- to 6-qt slow cooker, cover, and cook for 3 to 4 hours on high, or 6 to 8 hours on low.

3. Stir in the cream and Parmigiano-Reggiano and heat through, about 5 minutes. Stir in the parsley and garnish with the frizzled prosciutto.

Like the other commenters, I think this app would also be helpful when I'm shopping. It's great that you can check off the ingredients for each recipe as you buy them or if you already have them at home.

Thanks for offering the giveaway! (And perfect timing too; it just started getting cold and rainy here. I know, boo-hoo for Southern California. What do I have to complain about?)
