My favorite valentines are good looking with a sense of humor. And I mean cards, not dates. The Vintage Valentine Museum has many that fit the bill, including these lovelies from the 1920s and ’30s.

The song that inspired this one, “You’re the Cream in My Coffee,” was first recorded in 1928. Other lyrics from that tune could have made equally interesting valentines.

You’re the salt
in my stew.

What sugar does for tea,
That’s what you do for me.

And my personal favorite:

You give life savor,
bring out its flavor,
so this is clear,
You’re my Worcestershire,
Dear.

They really knew how to do romance back in the day.

You don’t have to look far for contemporary versions of these funny valentines. Song lyrics are still popular.

This one pairs perfectly with cream in my coffee.

But homemade cards are always the sweetest. If you’re looking to make your own, take inspiration from this one from 1914. All you need: scissors, glue, construction paper, and a miniature globe.
