Jeffrey Brown Wins Eisner Award!
At this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, Jeffrey Brown won an Eisner Award for Darth Vader and Son in the Best Humor Publication category. The Awards are named after Will Eisner, creator of “The Spirit” comic strip and pioneer of the comic book world, and are considered the Oscars of the comic industry, and have been awarded at Comic-Con for the past 25 years. The ceremony honored works from 2012. While Jeffrey has been involved in comics for decades, this is his first Eisner Award.

Of the book, Comics Bulletin said, “Darth Vader and Son is Brown at the top of his artistic game with beautiful full-color pages, many of which seem imbued with a sincerity that I would expect to find in his next autobiographical work… Darth Vader and Son is a book for fathers and sons and Star Wars fans and, well, pretty much anyone who enjoys happiness and smiles.”
The Chronicle Books team was beyond thrilled to see Jeffery receive this honor, as we have been working with him since 2007 when we published his adorable Cat Getting Out of a Bag, and then Cats Are Weird in 2010. When the concept of Darth Vader and Son was presented to our Entertainment publishing group, the reaction was an immediate, “YES!” The team loved how Jeffrey could combine the experience of being a parent with his natural sense of humor, and a deep knowledge of Star Wars (who knew?).
As the publicist on the book, I frequently heard interviewers ask Jeffrey, “How did you convince Lucasfilm to approve this book?” considering that it offers a different storyline than the one we all know from the films.
According to our Executive Editorial Director Sarah Malarkey, “This book happened because of Lucasfilm, who trusted us and understood the potential of this idea, and because of Jeffrey, who is an incredibly talented writer, artist, and observer of humanity. It was fun to join two partners who we’ve worked with separately for years.”

The partnership worked so well that we published the sequel, Vader’s Little Princess in May. Not only were both books well received critically, they are both New York Times bestsellers. At Comic-Con, we announced a third installment, coming in 2014.
