A Poem, Dedicated to Independent Bookstores
This Saturday, 93 independent bookstores across California will be celebrating the first-ever California Bookstore Day. (Think Record Store Day, but for book nerds.) Swing by your local bookstore and you might meet a famous author, illustrator, or a taco truck. Heck, Green Apple Books here in San Francisco will be rolling out ALL THREE. Plus, attending California Bookstore Day will be the only way you can get your hands on exclusive books and art pieces created specifically for this occasion, including Wendy MacNaughton’s Punk Rock Writers Journal.
To celebrate, our intrepid Northern California independent bookstore sales rep and office poet laureate, Anna-Lisa Sandstrum, penned an ode to the indies we love so dearly.
Dear Independent bookstores,
Your staff picks are my north star
Your mystery section my dirty little secret
Your bargain bins my reminder to keep writing
Without you, and your recommendations, my life would be less rich
Without you, and your creaky wood floors, I’d have less need for the word “creaky”
Without you, and your signed first editions, I’d never find a gift for *that* friend
I’ve stood in your kids section and practiced my Newbery Award acceptance speech
I hope you don’t mind
Anna-Lisa Sandstrum is the Northern California independent bookstore rep. at Chronicle Books. She lives on Arguello Blvd with her dog, too many roommates, and a bookshelf organized by book color.
