Winter is Coming: Inside the HBO Game of Thrones Coloring Book
Temperatures are cooling, leaves are falling, and staying in with a coloring book and a favorite show sounds just about perfect. Today, we’re excited to be talking about a new coloring book that lets you immerse yourself in the world of one of the most captivating series on TV: Game of Thrones.
Creating a coloring book sounds easy. Draw some stuff that someone else will think is fun to color in, and everyone is happy. But what if those drawings represent things that are a beloved and revered part of pop culture? What if there are specific people that need to look like the person that we watch on TV (and then draw/paint/cosplay/obsess over on the internet)? Throw in some dragons, undead warriors, and, oh yes, make sure those drawings are worthy of some of the best VFX on television.
For our latest project, HBO’s Game of Thrones Coloring Book, we started by coming up with a list of iconic elements, scenes, and characters. That list, after discussing with our friends at HBO, was turned over to a sequence of amazing illustrators and a colorist, who—along with visual references—brought this gorgeous book to life.
The Iron Throne
Starting with a set photo, our artist created an accurate rendering of the Iron Throne and gave us a fun-to-color page, with gorgeous borders to accent the details in the image. We knew this would be our cover, so we deliberately left this image half-colored in to entice the reader to finish it themselves. Good luck with all those swords…you’ll need it!
What’s Game of Thrones without a dragon? We chose a dynamic moonlit scene with Drogon perched on a building to show scale, as well as create an opportunity for our colorists to be imaginative with the lighting and color.
The Night’s King
In recent seasons, perhaps the most terrifying and iconic scene was when the Night’s King summoned the dead back to life at Hardhome with a mere gesture. We knew we had to give a full spread to this scene to really let the full impact show!
