A Marriage Proposal Hidden in a Book
Oh, the many joys of working in publishing. Sometimes you get news like what we’re about to tell you, and it kind of makes your whole week.
First, some quick background: Things I’d Do (But Just For You) is a sweet book about the quirky little things you only do for someone special. Like this:
You get the deal. Now for the fun part…
Our Senior Publicist, April, recently got this email from the book’s author, Jack Sjogren:
I hope you’re doing well! I have a good story for you about Things I’d Do (But Just For You).
A month ago I got a wonderful email that read:
I purchased your book a while ago and gave it to my partner as a gift. It’s been important to us ever since, as we use your words from the book daily! I mean, “I’d wake you up… with donuts” and “I’d make you a tiny hat… in case your hat gets cold” are our favorite parts of the book and we typically remind one another that we would indeed do these things daily… and sometimes we do!
Anyway, since your book has been such an important part of our relationship, I was wondering if there was any way I could purchase another copy and have it autographed by you? In fact, if I can get another copy, can I even go as far as having you write this: “Heather, Will you marry Ashley?”
Whether or not I am able to get such a copy, I want you to know that we appreciate your book and we are thankful that someone like you could put into words how we (and hopefully other couples) feel daily.
Of COURSE I said yes, and in addition I offered to draw her proposing to her girlfriend in the color scheme of the book, and slip a print of that in the back of the book. So I sent her the copy and the print, then just got an email tonight with news that it worked! And now two people are engaged with the help of our little book!
You read that right, folks—the adorable book led to a real life engagement. Check out the custom drawing Jack drew, and his note to the couple:
And here’s the happy, newly engaged couple:
Heather and Ashley, we wish you many, many years of happiness!
Now, where’s my tissue box…
