Hammerpress

Last week Anne of Prêt à Voyager gave a wonderful behind the scenes look at the Hammerpress studio on Design*Sponge. Anne’s post made me simultaneously reminisce fondly about my own letterpress roots (I love and miss the smell of ink, setting type with smudgy fingers, and the whir of the press), and proud that Chronicle is working with Hammerpress to produce some fabulously tactile (though not letterpressed) stationery products.

my love for letterpress is similar. i took a printmaking class in college and seeing letterpressed projects brings back all the sensory delights of the print room: running one’s fingers over the imprints, the feel of the paper’s rag, listening for the sound of press-ready ink, smelling pantone ink being mixed, hearing lead type being dropped into their place on the composing stick, not to mention looking at the beautiful results! the print studio was a very happy place for me and seeing hammerpress’ work brings back all those lovely memories! i’ve admired hammerpress’ pieces and i’m so excited you all will be carrying them!

It’s so nice to see Hammerpress’s stationary getting national attention: I’ve loved dropping by their shop to pick up a postcard or two over the years.

What I really love about letterpress (and printmaking in general) is the history and the process that is involved. There’s just something about physically designing things on a press rather than on the computer: you become more physically involved in the design itself. I think some of my best work has incorporated letterpress or some other form of printmaking.

I love letterpress because it still has the element of handcraft in an ever-more computerized design field. I wish I’d taken more printmaking classes in school!

Thanks so much, Naomi, Pete, Lorraine, and Luz for all of the great feedback on what letterpress means to you!

I randomly picked a number out of a glass and came up with number 2, so I will be contacting you, Lorraine, and will be sending you a complete set of our current Hammerpress stationery line.

    Cheers!
    Hannah
