Say hey! The Chronicle Books All-Star Sale! (July 8-10)
July 6th, 2007 | Guinevere de la Mare | Art and Design
San Francisco is hosting Major League Baseball’s 78th annual All-Star Game this week, and down here at Chronicle headquarters we’re right in the thick of it. AT&T Park is a stone’s throw from our front door, and the neighborhood is plastered with street banners, wayfinding systems, and sidewalk decals all leading towards baseball mecca.
In celebration of this momentous occasion (the last time SF hosted the game was 1984, the year “Like a Virgin” topped the charts), we’re hosting an All-Star Sale on our home turf. For three days only in the Chronicle Books lobby, you can browse a selection of our books, stationery, and gifts—and catch a firsthand glimpse of our spanking new digs at 680 Second Street. Whether you’re going to the game or not, we hope you’ll stop by!
ALL-STAR SALE HOURS:
Sunday, July 8: 10AM–4PM
Monday, July 9: NOON–5PM
Tuesday, July 10: 11AM–5:30PM
Anyone who has spent some time in San Francisco will recognize the bold graphics of the 2007 All-Star Game logo (and assorted signage) as the work of Michael Schwab. Arguably the Bay Area’s “illustrator laureate,” the Marin-based designer’s signature style has been called upon to render, in two-dimensional form, nearly every major landmark in the region. His iconic posters for the Golden Gate National Parks (including the GG Bridge, Alcatraz, Mount Tam, Muir Woods, and Crissy Field) are perhaps the most recognizable, however, Schwab’s flat planes of color and clever use of negative space pop up in logos and posters all over the place: the Fillmore Jazz Festival, Peet’s Coffee, the Ferry Building, not to mention a host of vineyards up in Wine Country. Now thanks to the All-Star Game, a few more San Francisco signposts have been added to the Schwab repertoire.
In the spirit of friendly competition, here’s a curve ball for all of you: Which recent Chronicle book did all-star graphic designer Michael Schwab illustrate? First to post the correct answer below will win a copy of the book.

I’ll play: The New California Cook
Was it the New California Cook by Diane Rossen Worthington?
Or am I mixing it up with the wine country book he recently did.
(BTW — LOVE the illustrations he did for the All-Star game. I wish they came in a set of postcards.)
The New California Cook it is, and Carol is our winner. Thanks for playing! By the way, I love the idea of postcards. We’ll pass along the word…
Thanks you for the book! I’m really enjoying looking through it, trying hard to narrow down what recipes to try. They all look wonderful and Michael Schwab’s illustrations are perfect.
