From the Design Desk: These Birds Are Here to Stay
March 9th, 2009 | Suzanne LaGasa | Art and Design, Design Desk
A few months back I wrote about how the love for all things French seemed like a trend that would never die. Well, another popular trend is birds. For years now we’ve been expecting the bird mania to pass. Flora and fauna came and faded, then there were the geometric crystals, the unicorns, the maritime craze… But the birds don’t seem to be flying off to warmer climates. In one scoop I gathered the birds below from my colleagues’ desks.

I never fell for the owl mania, but I confess, I like birds. Especially little fat ones like wrens, tits, and robins. So working on Jeffrey Fisher’s new book, Birds, was great fun. I’ve saved and even framed the printer’s proofs.

Jeffrey had a strong vision for his book and guided us and designer Gretchen Scoble on every detail, such as the paper, the end sheets, the illustrated title page, and the bird on the bookcase. Birds will be released this Wednesday, March 11. It’s a sweet little book (6″ x 9″) on all uncoated paper. One bird per spread…

I should also mention that Jeffrey has created many other projects for Chronicle, like his Literary Notecards, Literary Address Book, the Basic Human Kindness Address Book (all typographical in nature), and my favorite: Birds Notecards (below).

It would be a little odd to sing my praises of Jeffrey Fisher’s Birds without also giving a nod to our very different, but still fun, Bird Songs series from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology…

…and to another charming book called Sightings. This little guy is a collection of reflections on nature by New York Times writer Sam Keen with illustrations by Mary Woodin.

I really wish I were a bird watcher, otherwise known as a Twitcher, like Jeffrey Fisher (who also gets to live in Paris). But for now, I’ll content myself with beautiful bird art (and dirty city pigeons?!)

Speaking of sweet birds, check out the new Chronicle Books Twitter page design.
il est trop beau ce livre d’oiseaux!!! je veux le même!
What a great book to work on! Love that it’s a small size and one bird per page. I will have to add that to our collection. I have the note cards set which I love. Thanks for sharing!
The book looks lovely! As a fellow bird-lover, I’m glad to hear they’ll be sticking around…
Call me biased, but this bird fancier is thrilled to see that all things avian are still a solid trend. And not just in print–they seem to be a constant source of inspiration with the fashion crowd too. Alexander McQueen’s fall 09 collection features a houndstooth morphing into a flock of birds.
