Chronicle Craft: Tricks and Treats with Ed Roth of Stencil1
October 22nd, 2009 | Ed Roth | Craft, Guest Authors, Home
First, let me say how honored I am to announce book deux with Chronicle Books - Stencil 101 Décor! I had a great time making these big ol’ stencils and hope you make some nice bold statements with them. Ten precut plastic stencils to choose from with some great color photos and fun how-to’s. I even shot a video to show you the way! Now, let’s get to the giving!
So, we are not only giving away a copy of my new oversized stencil book Stencil 101 Décor but we are “sweetening” the deal by throwing in some Chocolate Bar chocolates with Stencil1 designs!
About the chocolates:
A few years ago, Alison Nelson, owner of Chocolate Bar, asked me if I would like to work together and have my designs appear on her chocolates. How could I refuse?! Alison makes quality chocolate and adds to the mix an array of NY-based artists. Together, we created a cool product, mini square chocolate bars with some of my more fun designs like gogo girls, hydrolic cars, and boomboxes.
Leave a comment below and tell us what you’ll be wearing, making, or doing to celebrate Halloween next week and we’ll randomly select one commenter who will receive my book & Alison’s delicious chocolates. Don’t you love it? Good Luck and happy stenciling!
Thanks, Ed

Oooo, I want to win that chocolate. Yum! I will be finishing up my toddler’s gnome costume. The pointy hat and beard are adorable!
I’m most looking forward to the Dia de los Muertos festival next Sunday in Oakland. For Halloween proper, I’m probably going to reprise the Wrath of Khan costume we did a couple weeks ago http://www.flickr.com/photos/gwen/3944064456/
will be wearing my new chopped hairdo and going as Jean Seberg in “au bout de souffle”!
i think i’ll be making some pumpkin cupcakes with a brown sugar buttercream filling and a spiced frosting. doesn’t that sound nice?
I will be “living” it up as a dead Jane Austen in complete finery!
I will be running around the city, trying to find more materials for my sushi Halloween costume!
this is just in time (the stenciling how to) as I am about to undertake a big redeco! and chocolates, always in time!
This is my first halloween in a house & not a condo building, so I have a huge, overflowing bowl full of awesome candy I can’t wait to hand out! I bought the good kind of big bars so that I will be known as the house that gives out awesome candy!
I will be dressed as a mylar balloon with no boy inside.
Our family picks a theme every year. This year is Little Red Riding Hood. The one-year-old will wear her red cape, her big brother will be the big bad wolf, Dad will be the woodsman and I get to be grandma. We live in a small town and all the business downtown decorate and give out candy. It’s one huge party!
Since PeeWee is making a comeback, I’ll probably dust off my white shoes and my checked suit and bowtie.
Halloweeny!!! HuhHuh!
I will be dressed as ‘exhausted Mom,’ schlepping kids all over the neighborhood whilst simultaneously handing out candy at the front door. Prior…decorating, the 5 yr. old’s pink pirate costume to finish and the 12 yr old’s gross zombie makeup to purchase….. pumpkin carving, desserts and savories go without saying. Best holiday…ever!!! Hope everyone has fun!!!
We will be headed to my parents to help them make a grave-front-yard, carve some pumpkins and throw together some weird outfits out of the dregs of Halloween past costume box.
p.s. the artwork on the chocolates is gorgeous!! (sorry for the 2 comments…delete one if necessary!)
I don’t have any plans. Of course, that could change. The book and chocolates look great!
I need this book so I can continue to decorate my apt…the inspiration for my Halloween costume comes from the giant Disintegration poster I recently hung up: Robert Smith!
oooh, love the book AND the chocolates!
we’re having a pumpkin carving & decorating contest at our house next weekend! we live in a 2nd story apartment, so when we’re done, we’ll display all the pumpkins on our balcony. should be fun preparations for Halloween
There are few things in life better than books and chocolate!
This Halloween, I will be handing out candy to the adorable ghosts and goblins and Harry Potters. I will be dressed as a Burton-esque version of the wicked queen from Snow White.
I’m going as a day of the dead siamese complete with red dress, red platforms and big red roses with a siamese half mask I’ve made. hmmm…now that I think about it..maybe I’ll add some feathers…..
Going as a fox (mask I’m making out of paper mache and brown feathers) to the Devotchka halloween show with my wife.

For Halloween, we’ll be trick or treating with our neighbors on our street….it will be a fun, carefree evening
Our Halloween will start early with a morning dance recital performed by our darling granddaughter and her preschool class…precious!
I’ll be wearing a “tattoo” shirt for Halloween, playing the role of rocker girl….unless I win this book, then I may be stencil queen for Halloween!
The stencils look wonderful. Beautiful, fun packaging on the chocolates. I’ll be trick or treating with my children as a sparkling star in the sky.
I simply can’t wait to get a peak inside at all the stencils! I’ll be in my Zombie finest and participating in my local Zombie Walk.
i’ll take my daughter trick or treating on her first Halloween!
Family costume: the little one is Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Husband Guy and I will be carrying her around dressed as (you guessed it!) Flying Monkeys!
Awesome post, Chronicle folks!
This will be my first Halloween as a married lady - so excited to spend this Halloween with my husband. We are in LA and will probably go to the KCRW Masquerade party to see DJ Shadow!!
Since our 4 mo old will be Tigger I’ll probably wear my Alice costume to keep a Disney theme. Still trying to decide what spooky treat to cook up & take to our friends’ annual Halloween party.
working, nothing fun - love those chocolates - so cute!
I’m baking up a storm for my kids’ school events: ghost cake lollies and cupcakes w/ candy corn + skulls on them…
I have a witch and a giant cat and a robot to dress so obviously I will be “tired mommy” come halloween…
Getting ready for my birthday, which is the next day —
Forget costumes and other halloween fanfare, just give me that chocolate!
I will dress up as the Devil and squirt people with my squirt gun.
I’ll be going to Times Square, to see the parade with my butterfly mask and my stripped tights!
i will be hopefully wearing a swimsuit and snorkeling somewhere in the western caribbean. i cannot wait. no candy this year.
I can’t stand Halloween, but I love the stencil book.
Yes, I love it! We are dressing as lions (if I finish the costumes this weekend) and attending a couple kid-friendly parties.
” On A Clear Day I Can Stencil Forever!” …..
Can’t wait for the book release party!
I’ll be a team of 4 heroes (we’re not sure what kind yet; literary, historical, current event?!) with my 5th grade teaching partners!
I am going to have friends and family over for a yummy dinner and hand out candy to trick or treaters!
I’ll be wearing my fabulous handmade, handpainted Pabst Blue Ribbon beer can costume, hanging out with my artcar friends, and seeing if we can scare some neighbourhood kids
I’ll be a folded piece of wallpaper - all tessellated into a cozy cocoon to guard against the SF chill - hopefully decorated with Ed’s fab pattern stencils!
My partner and I are kinda nerdy, so it only makes sense that we are dressing up as SIMS for Halloween! To make it even better, we will only speak to one another in Sim language and have a “floating” rotating white diamond circling above our heads!
I am going to dress up as partly cloudy with a chance of showers. I will be wearing a blue suit with clouds painted on it, and carrying around a squirt gun. When people ask what I am, I will say, “Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Showers” then squirt my water bottle.
Those chocolates look amazing! I’m going to an Egyptian-themed party - gotta put together my Cleopatra costume, complete with gold eye shadow and plenty of bead-work on a sheath dress! Happy Halloween!
Horn: check. White floor-length dress: check. Pale makeup and white wig: check. I’m going to be a narwhal!
We’ll be celebrating my husband’s 40th Halloween birthday!
