I am blessed to live in the Northeast, where fall is one of the most festive and magical times of the year. Colors burst from the leaves of the trees, local farms offer hayrides and pumpkin picking, and houses are decorated with scarecrows, corn, and enormous spider webs. Makes you fill like a kid all over again!

Lately I’ve had the baking bug and have been making breads with a base of coconut and almond flour, pureed pumpkin, and lots of nutmeg and cinnamon. Heavenly with a hot bevvie in the morn! I’ve also taken on carving my own pumpkins and roasting the seeds from within. 350 degrees for 20 minutes and sprinkled with sea salt will make for some excellent snacking this week while thinking about Thanksgiving!

I usually host about 25 people for Thanksgiving, and I love to let loose that day. I make a pitcher of cosmos and keep the bar stocked, and I make everything from scratch: roasted turkey with herbs and spices, cornbread stuffing, green beans and Brussels sprouts, cranberry muffins, apple cake, and meringue chocolate chip cookies. This year, though, my family has made the conscious effort to go gluten-free in an effort to manage my son’s food allergies. And so we shall adapt accordingly. In the meantime, let’s talk about some other great ways to enjoy your holiday while keeping everyone healthy and sated.

Cook With Coconut Oil. Coconut oil is the new gorgeous girl in our house. Coconut oil stands up perfectly well to high heat temperatures, and has a light, sweet taste. The lauric acid present in the coconut supports immune function, helps the body burn fat, and is readily digested. Don’t be shy about adding it to baked goods, using it to cook vegetables, eggs, and meats, or to your protein shake.

Bake With Coconut or Chickpea Flour. Coconut and chickpea flours are both high in fiber and add an excellent texture to your foods. I love to bake with coconut flour, but I’ve also used them when making crab cakes, pancakes, and in a pinch as breading. Chickpea flour can be used as an egg replacer in recipes and will also bump up the protein content of your recipes. My mum baked me a gluten-free birthday cake over the summer with pureed chickpeas in place of flour. It was uber-rich and chocolatey and absolutely delicious. The funny part was that she wanted me to guess what the “secret ingredient” was after I took a bite. “What is this, The Help?!?” I asked her. Our sides were splitting we were laughing so hard! My father witnessed the whole thing and none of us could keep a straight face after that.

Treat Yourself to a Pastured Turkey. Your turkey is only as healthy as the diet it was fed when it was alive. Pastured animals graze outdoors on grass, which means they contain omega-3 fatty acids and are leaner creatures than their caged-up counterparts. They are free of all antibiotics and hormones, and do not eat any corn or soy, so their meat contains the proper ratio of omega3:omega 6 fats. My favorite part about eating roasted turkey is the crispy skin on the outside. The skin is a bit sweet because it contains the amino acid glycine, which is a natural detoxifier. Turkey is so easy to make that there’s no need to be intimidated by it. Rub the bird from the inside out with a generous amount of olive oil, and liberally cover the bird with dried sage, onion and garlic powder, and salt and pepper. Roast the turkey at 425 degrees for the first 15 minutes, and then turn the heat down to 400 degrees for the duration of the cooking time. You should cover the bird after an hour so the skin doesn’t turn black, and baste it every 30 minutes. A good rule of thumb to calculate your cooking time is 15 minutes per pound, and you should portion your turkey at one pound per person to account for the weight of the bones.

Get Your Workout In Before The Feast. Even though I host Thanksgiving, I always make sure I head outdoors in the morning for a vigorous walk or some uphill sprints before everyone comes over. It’s a great stress-buster and gives me enough endurance for a very long day on my feet. Plus, it keeps me on track with my eating so I don’t go completely overboard. I like my workouts quick and dirty; 30 minutes is enough to get the job done right. If you want to be home to keep an eye on the bird, you can perform these at home, too:

Repeat the circuit below 5 times total to complete a 10-minute circuit.

30 seconds Squat Jumps

30 seconds Switch Jumps

30 seconds Squat Thrusts

30 seconds REST

If you have another 10 minutes, alternate 1 minute of jumping rope with 1 minute of rest until time is up. And then, if you have another 10 minutes, repeat the first exercise circuit. You will be dying by the end, I promise—and mighty sore afterwards, too!

One Last Word Before The Bird. Stress management is one of the most important things you can do for yourself this holiday season. Give yourself what I like to call mandatory permission to take time for yourself and quiet your mind. Putting other people’s needs before your own all the time will take its toll on you in the long run. So take yoga or meditate two to three times per week. Say no to parties you truly don’t want to go to. Spend time with friends who make you laugh and don’t care if your house is clean or your roots are showing. Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things before you go to bed that made your day great. And get enough sleep to give you the energy to power through. Make the holidays healthful and sane this year; that’s the absolute best gift you can give yourself.

Happy Thanksgiving, and Stay Gorgeous!

Valentine’s Day has always meant one thing to me: spending time with people you love. In my single days, this meant sending cards to family and throwing parties for all my friends. There’s nothing that gives me greater joy than bringing good souls together and feeding them well. No matter if you’re a swinging single or Sadie the Married Lady—being healthy and sexy can be a snap with these simple tips:

-The right mix of protein, healthy carbs, and essential fatty acids will power you through the night and control your chocolate cravings. Serve up simply prepared options to your guests so they can pick and choose what appeals to them.

-For an uber-simple appetizer, serve guacamole sprinkled with pomegranate arils (seeds) with organic blue corn chips and veggies. You can buy store-bought guacamole and “doctor” it by adding 1 fresh avocado and 2 drops of Tabasco sauce.

-Another great appetizer is organic smoked salmon rolled up around avocado slices or whipped cream cheese and fresh dill. The omega-3s will leave your skin glowing, and your mood frisky!

-Skewer chicken or cubed lamb with tomatoes and yellow pepper. Lightly brush with olive oil and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Serve with satay sauce.

-Slice up fresh, organic mozzarella with tomatoes and fresh basil. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

-Pair up these luscious nibbles with a signature drink for the night. The Gorgeous-tini is always a crowd pleaser:
3/4 cup vodka
1/3 cup triple sec
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
1/3 cup pomegranate juice
Fill a pitcher with ice. Add vodka, triple sec, fresh lime juice, and pomegranate juice. Stir until well combined and thoroughly chilled.

-For dessert, serve chocolate-dipped strawberries, or treat yourself and your guests to a box of your favorite gourmet chocolates. It’s well worth the indulgence!

Fall is here, and it’s my favorite time of year. The air gets crisper, you get to dress in layers, and your hair stays frizz-free and under control (or so you hope). But there’s another reason why I treasure the fall: pomegranates. Dark, sweet, tart, and let’s face it—sensual.

Pomegranate juice is something of a panacea. Drinking 8 ounces of 100% pomegranate juice per day has been proven in research studies to improve everything from cardiovascular disease and blood vessel blockages to diabetes and erectile dysfunction. Now that’s the kind of news I like to spread! Imagine being able to drink a sweet, tangy, delicious juice that will actually improve your health. This is a case where food is literally medicine.

Another great thing about pomegranates is their versatility. You can drink the juice, or eat the seeds and their surrounding juice sacs (also known as arils). You can eat them raw, or use them in cooking. You can enjoy them hot or cold. The choice is yours; the benefits will be there regardless. Sprinkle them on salads, over steak, in a smoothie, or plunk them in your cocktail. To ensure your house is stocked, store the arils in the freezer; they’ll keep frozen for up to six months.

One of my favorite recipes is a Thanksgiving favorite in our house, but they are a sumptuous treat any time:

Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Arils

Ingredients:
2 cups arils from 2—3 large pomegranates
8 oz. fine quality bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

Directions:
Score 2—3 fresh pomegranates and place in a bowl of water. Break open the pomegranates under water to free the arils (seed sacs). The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top. Sieve and put the arils in a separate bowl. Reserve 2 cups of the arils from fruit and set aside. (Refrigerate or freeze remaining arils for another use.)

Line a shallow 11 x 16 x ½-inch baking sheet with parchment paper. Over medium low heat, melt chocolate in a saucepan set over a pan of simmering water. When chocolate is sufficiently melted, transfer to a work bowl. Keep the bowl in a pan of warm water for convenience.

Allow chocolate to cool to the touch (but should still be runny). Add the arils and stir to combine. Use a fork to scoop out clusters of chocolate and arils; drop clusters onto the prepared baking sheet. (Work quickly as chocolate will harden.) Place baking sheet with clusters in the refrigerator for 1 hour or until confections harden.

On Monday I had a Carrie Bradshaw-esque day. It began with a taxi ride to the seriously gorgeous C&C television studio in Midtown Manhattan to partner up with Jamba Juice for their Free Breakfast Day and 21-Day Challenge satellite media tour. I got my hair and makeup done while sipping on some green tea and continued to have touch-ups all throughout the day so I was always camera-ready. There were healthy snacks and water on hand, a super luxe lounge where I could go and relax between takes, and a fabulous media coach on hand to guide me through the interviews. A girl could get used to this!

Now you may be thinking, what does Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous have in common with Jamba Juice? The answer is simple: Breakfast! Quite simply, most of us do not make the time to cook our breakfasts, and when we do grab something on the go, we don’t always choose wisely. So Jamba Juice decided to take matters into their own hands and revamp their breakfast menu to help create a nation of morning people. They gave away over 650,000 free breakfasts on April 8th to inspire and simplify healthful living for folks just like you. (Hey I’d do it myself, but there’s one of me and a nation’s worth of them.) And they hired me as their spokesperson to tell the country all about it.

Now I have to admit I was a little gun-shy at first because I am super-picky about what companies I will endorse. I hemmed and hawed and grilled everyone like crazy about what expectations would be made from me. Everyone was super-accommodating, so I decided to take the plunge. Once I got to the TV studio, the biggest surprise of all happened … my book, my precious Pink Bible, was prominently displayed on the set, and shared significant amounts of air-time with Jamba Juice. In fact, it was cross-promoted on every television and radio segment. I’m not just talking a quick fly-by mention, here—no. It blew away any expectations from the day that I had from the get-go.

As an author it’s hard to know what PR opportunities will pay off, but you have to keep putting yourself out there. Example: Chronicle generously sent me up to Montreal in March for a book promo event at the W Hotel, and we were socked with the season’s biggest whiteout blizzard! (Despite this, we still had a 50% attendance that night—God bless those hearty Canadians!) You just never know where life (and PR) will take you. Follow the hot pink brick road … until the next event, anyway.

Hello Gorgeous Guys and Gals!

It’s getting to be that time of year again when corn husks and pumpkins go up, little ghouls and goblins come to your door, you give them all your Halloween candy and bid adieu to the trolls marching down your sidewalk… oh come on, really! I know what really happens when all the trick or treaters leave—you open up your cabinet and bust out your secret stash of peanut M&M’s, Bit O’Honey’s and Milk Duds!! If your Halloween festivities are the kickoff equivalent to the Holiday Superbowl of eating, stay tuned, because it doesn’t have to be an all-out bingefest from Halloween through New Year’s.

I grew up in a household where the motto was “If it’s not chocolate, its not dessert!” But I am still well-versed in my knowledge of all types of candy- licorice allsorts, caramels, chocolate-dipped pretzels, malted milk balls- and know how easy it can be to fall prey to these goodies during the holidays. So I’m here today to tell you how you can embrace your inner child without feeling deprived during the upcoming festivities.

When it comes to indulging in your favorite treats during celebrations, you can actually use this approach year-round. First things first: take a minute to think about what appeals most to you in a sweet treat: Chocolatey? Sugary? Crunchy? Chewy? Figure out what flavors and textures you enjoy eating most. If you’re not a candy-holic but love other things like gooey cheesy pizza, identify what temperatures, textures and flavors you enjoy most about that food: hot, cold, spicy, salty, etc. Finding what you really want to eat is a key factor when you want to truly honor your cravings—eating around the craving just won’t do.

Next, buy individual portion sizes of your favorite food. Even if you go back for seconds, it’s much better to eat two small portions then out of a troth-style package of candy-coated sugar bombs. We have become a super-sized society; individually-wrapped portions help us retrain our brains on what a normal portion size really looks like.

Last but not least, check in with yourself and know your hunger and fullness levels. You may not be able to resist your Aunt Mildred’s marshmallow-covered sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving, nor should you! Take the time to enjoy your favorite foods that you only get to eat once a year- but make sure you stop eating when you’re full. Try serving yourself on a salad plate, so you can conjure up the memories of childhood without splitting the seams of your current reality.
