And while we're looking for variations, who says a cookbook has to be a book? Weber's Art of the Grill Deck (Chronicle Books; $14.95) is a boxed set of cards that can be easily carried to the supermarket. One side of each card is printed with a recipe, the other with a glowing picture of the results. The fifty cards offer a full grill menu, with recipes for starters, sides and salads, meat, seafood, and poultry, vegetable main dishes, sauces, and desserts. The neatly edited and presented collection pushes the envelope in flavor and technique. The dishes range from Moroccan Butterflied Leg of Lamb and Tandoori Chicken Pieces to Street Corner Sausages with Grilled Onion and Fennel.

The deck includes cards that offer menu suggestions and cooking techniques, but even with these tips, some of the recipes will take a practiced hand. Cornbread cooked on the grill in a skillet will take more than one try to get right. But the recipes are well thought out. Berry Biscotti Crisp is perfectly designed for the grill, with a light crust of ground up biscotti and delicate fruits that give up their juices quickly. Other recipes call for strong flavors that stand up to a smoky grill finish. Coffee and Pepper-Crusted New York Steaks are meaty, sharp, smooth, and as close to perfect as a steak can get. -Cookbook Digest
