i am 8-bit -- Pac-Man. Frogger. Super Mario Bros. These classic videogames are burned into the collective consciousness of an entire generation, thanks to countless hours spent at pizza parlors and bowling alleys across the country. Now artists such as Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, and Ashley Wood put their memories to paper, canvas, and wood to create original works of art inspired by the art of the videogame. Chuck Klosterman shares his thoughts—in his distinctively insightful and entertaining style—in a foreword on how videogames created a new playground for artistic expression. With more than 100 thought-provoking, amusing, and simply fun pieces of original art, i am 8-bit is a pixilated stroll down memory lane.

8-Bit Meets Art

2009-11-05 | 9:27 PM | Bree Lundberg
I Am 8-Bit is an excellently designed book that will bring back fond memories of (or give a newfound appreciation for) classic games of yesteryear. It's filled with top quality pieces created by contemporary artists including Shawn Barber, Gary Baseman, Luke Chueh, Anna Chambers, Gabe Swarr, etc. The cover doesn't really do justice to the variety of media and styles of art included. Both as an artist and a gamer, this is one book I love having on my shelf.
