Emily's Balloon -- One day, Emily gets a balloon. By the end of the afternoon, the balloon is no longer just a plaything. Emily and the balloon are friends. But when the balloon blows away, what will Emily do? The beautifully evocative illustrations and the timeless innocence of the story make this deceptively simple book a sure classic—sweet, compelling, and filled with the wonder and discovery of friendship.

Emily's Balloon is one of the simplest and lovliest books published in recent years. With gentleness, Sakai's concise prose and charming illustrations introduce to children the delight of an active imagination. I read it to a young girl, and she was captivated by the story; she too had played in a similar way with a ball or balloon, and was thrilled to see someone else do the same. The universality of the story only adds to it's charms. |
