cute but hard to do!

I love, love love the designs and couldn't wait to try them out. Followed instructions to the letter. Designs turned out rather faint (like, too faint to be seen properly on grey marle t-shirt). Tried several times with similar results. My husband tried one on an old t-shirt and got a better result by leaving iron on for longer but this also scorched the t-shirt! What am I doing wrong??
