Good Read Aloud, Great Fun

Amy Krouse Rosenthal has written a ton of good books, but I think this has got to be our favorite. " Duck! Rabbit!" is just a lot of fun and my two kids have poured over the book ever since it arrived. The story's roots are in the age-old optical illusion and Tom Lichtenheld has done a fabulous job in making the image simpler and more kid-friendly-- while keeping it's dual elements. I could spin my wheels describing the what the Duck! Rabbit! experience is like, but Chronicle Books has put together a movie that says-- and shows-- it all. Talking Points::: Duck! Rabbit! is great fun. My just-turned 7 and 9 year-olds love both the artwork and dialog. The book has broad appeal and should find a good audience within the 3ish thru 9ish age range. It is an Excellent Read-aloud which I think could be used for a primer since the text is large, with simple sentences. The Accelerated Reading number for Duck! Rabbit! is a generic "1". This means that the vocabulary and syntax have been found to be at the 1st Grade level. The exact month within the 1st Grade hasn't been determined. Pam T~ mom and reviewer at BooksForKids-reviews

What a discussion starter!

My Kindergarten students found this book very engaging and humorous. They loved seeing the pictures from both points of view. They also enjoyed hearing how the conversation played out with trying to convince the other person to change his/her mind. This book will definitely be added to my classroom library!

Perfect for Emerging Readers

I took my 5 year old son to see Amy Krouse Rosenthal's book signing - she read a few titles and he chose this one. He memorized the story and reads it aloud to his baby sister. Once in a while, he goes off script - but this has been a wonderful book for building his confidence as a reader. He is beginning to recognize the words and get back on track. He can join his brothers when they have reading time and not feel left out. And the book is such fun - the illustrations are vivid and totally change the readers' perspective as you go back and forth between the duck and the rabbit. We love all AKR's books, but this one is a particular favorite.
