SHARING THE SECRETS OF LONGEVITY
Want to live a longer, healthier, happier life? Try eating less, filling up on fresh
fruit, taking short naps and telling the truth!
These are just some of the hundreds of tips found in "Secrets of Longevity: Hundreds of Ways
to Live to Be 100," a new book by Dr. Maoshing Ni, a 38th-generation doctor of Chinese medicine
and an authority in the field of Taoist anti-aging medicine.
"Probably the single greatest factor determining how long we live and how well we live is our
own behavior," explains Dr. Mao, a doctor to Hollywood stars who practices at the Tao of Wellness
in Los Angeles, where he directs the Longevity and Healthy Aging Program. "It's about what we eat,
how much we eat, how we work and how we play."
For example, Dr. Mao recommends eating less but more frequently. That means five small meals a day
instead of three large ones. "I've interviewed many centenarians—people who have lived to
be 100—and I've never met one who overate," he says.
Those meals should include plenty of fresh fruit, too. Why? Dr. Mao calls fruit "nature's
medicine," and for good reason. Fruits are bursting with antioxidants, phytochemicals and
essential nutrients—such as fiber, vitamins and minerals. These vital nutrients help support
growth and maintenance of health, provide sustainable energy and help keep body functions running smoothly.
Healthy rituals are also important for a long and satisfying life, he adds. A few simple suggestions:
Start the day with slow stretches. Take five-minute "power" naps to refresh yourself. And make
time for daily walks, tea and telling your friends and family that you love them.
"Your body wants to live to be 100," he says. "All you need to do is simply get out
of the way and help your body do what it does best: live!"
