ACTIVITIES

Activities with Young Children in Small Groups

Sorting and Describing (Level 1): Give one child a well-shuffled deck of cards. Ask the child to sort the cards so that all the matching objects are in piles. Ask the child to identify each object and describe it briefly.

Concentration (Level 1): Give a small group of children a deck of cards and tell them to spread them out, face down on a table or the floor. Each child gets a turn to pick up two cards and turn them over. If they match, the child takes them. If they don't match, the child turns them over again. The goal is to collect as many pairs as possible.

Activities with Young Children in Large Groups

Collage (Levels 1 and 2): Using the magazine pictures the students (or you) collected, ask them to create a collage—either individually or as a class—that expresses their excitement for the topic.

Painting (Level 2): Allow each child to pick an object from the deck and make his or her own large painting of the object demonstrating at least one feature described on the cards. For example, "Jellyfish often have long tentacles." Write this description on the bottom of the painting. Hang the artwork around the room.

Activities with Older Children in Small Groups

Poetic License (Levels 2 and 3): Make sure you have at least 1 deck for every 12 children. Sort the deck so that each student gets all the cards for one object (the sun, a whale, etc.). Ask each student to write a poem based on the facts and pictures on the card. Ask each student to read his or her poem to the entire class.

Fact Finding (Level 3): Make sure you have at least 1 deck for every 12 children. Sort the deck so that each student gets all the cards for one object (the moon, a shark, etc.). Ask the students to perform some research to find at least four more facts about their object. Each student should be prepared to teach the information they learned to the entire class.

Activities with Older Children in Large Groups

Game Show (Levels 2 and 3): Distribute the deck of cards to the class so that everyone has at least one card. Each student is responsible for knowing the information on his or her card(s). Collect the cards after the students have had time to learn the material and divide the class into two teams. Ask questions based on the information on the cards. The teams compete to see who can answer the most questions. Shuffle the deck and redistribute the cards. Play again until everyone knows ALL the information on the cards.

Who am I? (Level 3): Give each student all four cards for one object. Each student stands up in front of the class and describes the features of the object. For example, "My object is the largest planet, has a large red spot, etc." The class must guess what the student is describing. As a variation, the class can try to guess after the first clue. If the class is NOT correct, they get another clue, and so on until they identify the object.
