My
initial sketches for Snug
As a Bug were much more detailed and realistic than what I ended up
with in the finished book. When I compared the importance of depicting
maternal love and the closeness of bedtime rituals versus the importance
of depicting accurate details of bug anatomy, the images took on the warmth
and appeal that better represents the message of the book. They are now
very cuddly creatures!
I remember
well how busy a young mother's life is. It's hard to organize the day
to include time for reading stories, although we all know how important
that is. I made it a habit to cuddle and read to my boys before nap time
and bedtime. Those are special memories for me and I hope I've helped
to create a book for those times that new families can enjoy.
