SET THE SCENE: The teacher and the students should bring in artwork, photographs, books and music that can be displayed and played in the classroom while the class works on the projects for this unit. DOWNLOAD A MAP OF SIENNA'S TRAVELS OR CREATE YOUR OWN: Download Sienna's map HERE, or put up a giant map of the United States on a large bulletin board and have kids create visual images and written explanations to mark each location that Sienna visited. CONNECT PERSONAL FAMILY HISTORIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS EVENTS:
Have students interview their parents and grandparents about their family histories and
create a class map that shows where students' ancestors and present day family came from

Are there places they would choose to go other than the ones mentioned in Sienna's Scrapbook? Are there sites in their own home state, their own city or town they would like to visit? How and why would they plan their trip differently? Create a map pinpointing locations you would visit.
MAKE YOUR OWN SCRAPBOOK:
Have students create a scrapbook about one person mentioned in the book. Similar to a
CREATE A GIANT AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY TIMELINE: Have each student choose an event or person from Sienna's Scrapbook. Have him/her create a visual image and blurb to represent his/her selection. Make sure the date(s) of the event or birth and/or death dates are clearly noted. The teacher should create a timeline on a long piece of butcher paper to display on a classroom wall that spans from the earliest date mentioned in Sienna's Scrapbook to the latest.
