Chronicle Books is looking for a Publicist for the Food and Lifestyle publishing group. This position will be based either in San Francisco or our Manhattan office. The purpose of this position is to publicize and promote Chronicle Books’ Food and Lifestyle list—both frontlist and backlist—and promote Chronicle Books as a publisher of quality titles, seeking to brand our publishing in the minds of members of the media and consumers and build consumer awareness for our food and lifestyle publishing. The Publicist will partner with the Marketing Manager for Food and Lifestyle to create cohesive campaigns title by title, book by book marketing and publicity plan for our Food and Lifestyle category and all digital product launches that will drive sales, increase visibility, and make Chronicle Books a marketing leader. The Publicist will work closely and effectively with the Pub Groups to develop the list, communicate with sales, and provide publicity expertise throughout the publication process. Key to success will be creating a publicity strategy and plans that are executable, represent astute use of resources, a good return on investment, and that build sales.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • S/he produces press materials, completes mailings, sells serial/excerpt rights, plans and attends publication parties and author events, and works for reviews, mentions and author interviews in print, broadcast and online media
  • S/he also arranges author appearances locally and throughout the country, touring authors sometimes to numerous cities inside of a few weeks and booking flights, hotels, well as media interviews and appearances
  • S/he makes contact with and develops relationships with review media (print, broadcast and online), as well as with those throughout the country who run bookstore and non-bookstore related lecture programs who would host our authors
  • S/he attends and participates in acquisition and pub group meetings for Food and Lifestyle titles and team meetings
  • S/he aids the company in finding titles that would garner good and strong media attention, while being knowledgeable about the Art list of our competitors and their performance in the marketplace
  • S/he monitors the sales of our Food and Lifestyle titles (both frontlist and backlist), noting which titles are working or not working, and works closely with the marketing manager and sales department to encourage sales in all appropriate market channels
  • S/he proactively seeks out opportunities for Chronicle Books to be in the trade news, working with fellow publicists to develop story ideas, press releases, photo submissions and pitches that garner coverage for non-title specific coverage
  • S/he develops relationships with the New York media and shares her expertise with the publicity team, makes introductions and promotes the Chronicle Books list overall
  • S/he utilizes and engages social media as part of our publicity/marketing campaigns


The Publicist communicates regularly and effectively with authors, members of the media, and members of the sales department, and booksellers, in addition to and especially with the Marketing Manager for Food and Lifestyle and the Director of Marketing, other members of the publicity and marketing departments, and members of the company as a whole.


Periodic Job Responsibilities:

The Publicist periodically acts as liaison with outside freelance publicists and/or publicity departments; provides support at publication parties, author signings, readings, appearances, and author interviews; and researches categories for the database.



We are looking for candidates with 5+ years prior publishing and/or public relations experience, and a comprehensive understanding of the publishing industry is an asset in this role. They must have national media contacts and a proven ability to work in a fast-paced business environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, and strong public speaking skills are essential. In addition, candidates need a track record of successfully implementing publicity programs.


Successful candidates will have a thorough understanding of how publicity works and will be highly motivated and creative while possessing outstanding analytical skills to understand the company's and our competitors' strategies and products. Candidates must also have the ability to work independently and collaborate with others.
