Chronicle Books seeks a Publishing Director for Food and Lifestyle to join our team. The person in this role will grow Chronicle Books’ Food and Lifestyle publishing program, creating and guiding distinctive, profitable publishing that consistently surprises, delights, and sparks the passions of the end consumer, expands the company’s customer base, and enhances the reputation and brand of Chronicle Books as a whole.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Burnish Chronicle Books’ reputation as a premier provider of Food and Lifestyle publishing, building sustainable growth within the group and for the future. This includes, for example:

  • Initiating and appraising goals and strategy for Food and Lifestyle, cultivating a distinctive list of books and formats, building the community for that publishing, and connecting more deeply with it to enhance the Chronicle Books brand
  • Growing the revenue and profitability of the Food and Lifestyle list
  • Inspiring the Food and Lifestyle group as a mentor, advisor, and arbiter, promoting a high-functioning team environment informed by creativity, exploration, integrity, and strategic imperatives
  • Acquiring and developing bestselling Food and Lifestyle titles
  • Networking with authors, agents, licensors, packagers, overseas publishers, media, others in the creative community, and end consumers


Cultivate talent, internally and externally. This includes, for example:

  • Creating an environment that empowers staff to achieve objectives that support company strategy
  • Supervising and mentoring key Food and Lifestyle editorial personnel
  • Attracting and retaining acclaimed authors and other creative talent to the Chronicle list


Optimize growth and efficiencies across the company. This includes, for example:

  • Collaborating with the Publisher and other creative directors to ensure Chronicle’s overall strategic needs are being met
  • Advocating for innovative, profitable publishing throughout the company and helping ensure communication across teams to exploit opportunities for growth


Be an ambassador for Chronicle Books publishing, enhancing the company’s reputation among creators, retailers, librarians, the media, publishing peers, and end consumers.


Candidates should have at least three years’ executive experience in food and/or lifestyle publishing, with demonstrated success as a business and people leader. Strongly self-motivated as well as skilled at motivating others across all levels of the company, the successful candidate will have engaging interpersonal skills and be a team builder and strategist who is always alert to new opportunities.
