Fate! Luck! Chance!

Serendipity and innovative collaboration turned The Bonesetter's Daughter, Amy Tan's best-selling novel, into a pioneering opera, which debuts in 2008 at the San Francisco Opera before touring the world. In their own words, captured by Ken Smith, Amy Tan and composer Stewart Wallace describe an incredible journey that took them to China, where local village traditions, as well as singers, musicians, and designers became an integral part of the creative process. This one-of-a-kind book includes the complete libretto for the opera, written by Amy Tan.

Ken Smith is a Hong Kong-based journalist whose writing has appeared in the Financial Times and Gramophone, among other publications.

An important and wonderful book!

10/11/11| Michael Tierra
I was deeply moved by the Bonesetter's Daughter opera and at first passed on buying this book as I returned to my seat at intermission. After the last act with all of the creators and cast on the stage and realizing that this was a unique artistic collaboration perhaps unparalleled in the history of music, still filled with the inspirational exuberance i felt from the last act, I scrambled back to the
store an got a copy of Ken Smith's book. If anyone saw and liked this great opera they should read this book. For anyone who hasn't seen the opera, they should make it a priority to see it ASAP with the original direction, caste who and staging, and read this important documentation of this unique and remarkable artistic collaboration.

Now if you happen to buy the book without seeing the opera, I'm sure you will get a lot from the poetic libretto of Amy Tan and will want t see the opera.
