At last...melt-in-your-mouth G-free baking2/21/13| BeverlyFor me, this is one of the better entries in the gluten-free baking sweepstakes. I knew Morgan was a serious baker — not just a well-intentioned g-free enthusiast — when I flipped through her book and found convincing recipes for choux pastries. Other books take less of a "pro" approach and so while your baking might be healthy as all get out, it may not actually get eaten for lack of comfort and yum appeal. Morgan's recipes lack for neither, with up to date twists on tried and true classics, and pictures that help guide results and presentation. Her instructions are easy to follow, accurate, and results are generally impressive.
There are cookbooks I go back to because their recipes always "turn out." This is one of them: a go-to book for following to-the-letter, or for inspiration/guidance when adapting a standard flour-based recipe.
Not everything is flawless, but the same can be said of other trusted resources, even Martha Stewart.
Blackbird Bakery Gluten Free.1/26/13| JonesieI was about to buy this book until I read the 'Sales Handle'. Publisher/Writer gives other 'competitive titles' a public slating as being "Ugly" by way of promoting own book?? This is seriously offputting.
I mean, really??? Is a customer not capable of making her own decision without reading this kind of sweeping and no doubt unrealistic judgement about all other titles. Ridiculous. And on that note I won't be buying.
Better if I had better stores to choose from!10/11/11| Margaret ChindMaybe once or twice you might have heard me mention that my SisterB is allergic to wheat. Before this realization I never knew about a gluten-free way of life. I personally do not have a problem with wheat or gluten, but now gluten-free ingredients and recipes stand out to me. It's nice to know I'll have a few choices when my SisterB comes to visit rather than relying on her to fix the menu. (However she is an incredible cook, so that's not too bad when she does do the menu...)
The Blackbird Bakery Gluten-Free: 75 Recipes for Irresistible Gluten-Free Desserts and Pastries book has 75 recipes for irresistible desserts and pastries. And oh what a mouth-watering cover! (My cover is different from some I have seen, it has a berry/pastry in a glass container.) The notes on ingredients shares great information on gluten-free flours for a newbie like me, but anyone would benefits from these notes and tips. There are many ingredients that are new to me, but if these recipes taste anything like they look I am all for it.
- Apple-Pumpkin Muffins, p.26
- Southern-Style Corn Bread, p. 31
- Ginger Gingerbread, p.34
Just going through the first chapter, "biscuits, muffins and sweet breads" my salivary glands are on overdrive. The only qualm I have with this cookbook is that there are at least a handful of ingredients that I have looked high and low for and cannot find anywhere!
