Bike Snob
10/11/11| BDBieng a 'rider of bikes' for about 40 years now, I fell in love with this book. I do not consider myself a 'cyclist', nor a snob-- merely a goofball and sometimes jerk on two wheels. I'm fortunate enough to live in a mostly bike-friendly city... and to not own or need a car to commute to my work. I ride for fun, too.
Weiss' bliss lies in all things cycling, and his almost Taoist approach to surveying the universe of cycling and those who cycle is fantastic. One needent be a cyclist to really 'get' this book, but it may be an insightful assistant for someone who either knows one, loves one, or lives a tortured existence as the co-dependent partner to one...
'Snob's' writing is fun, and at many points while reading, I found myself nearing seizures from laughing so hard. This isn't declaring that he is a 'funny' writer-- moreso that he has a wit for euphemism and analogy which illustrates some of the idiotic, and idiosyncratic elements within and throughout the world of 'Bike'. The whole thing is a beautiful inside joke somehow, and while he will offend-- he doesn't discriminate, and ultimately, Weiss looks at his Taoist face in the mirror-- hating the BS of some cyclists ways, but loving the fact that whatever brand of freak is in the saddle of whatever kind of bike-- simply, and beautifully-- it is a "person on a bike"... how could it possibly be wrong, or a 'bad' thing.
Read this book. If you're a 'bike rider', you will be glad you did. If you aren't (yet).. you will become one soon after you close the cover.
