The Heartbreak Diet

Thorina Rose's funny, beautifully illustrated memoir charts the unexpected dissolution of her marriage and the strugglesand adventures of starting over. After marrying young, living in New York, and settling in San Francisco, Rose and herhusband start a family. When he begins an affair with his "running partner," Rose must find a way to rebuild her life with her two young sons, navigating her own inner doubts, the chorus of advice from well-meaning friends, and coping mechanisms close at hand: retail therapy and pet adoption (not so useful); leaning on friends and travels with gay men (very useful). With humor and insight, The Heartbreak Diet is a moving and entertaining meditation on fidelity, family, and finding one's way.

Thorina Rose is a San Francisco-based artist whose work has been featured in the books Office Kama Sutra and Lovers' Yoga, as well as Travel & Leisure and numerous other publications.

Words of a Wise Woman

The Heartbreak Diet is an illustrated novel. To be honest, I haven’t expanded my reading horizons to include graphic novels. I have read wonderful reviews of them but I just felt they weren’t for me. After reading this one though, I have changed my mind.

I received the The Heartbreak Diet in the mail last week and read it in an hour. It is a memoir about the author, Thorina Rose, and her experience with divorce. Thorina is married with two children when she finds out her husband’s new found interest in jogging is much more than exercise. He is having an affair with the younger, prettier woman he jogs with. Each chapter begins with Words of Wise Women beginning with Gloria Steinem through Dolly Parton. One chapter hilariously has Thorina inviting over the other woman to discuss her expectations. I also loved the illustrations which the very talented author drew herself. You may think this is a light hearted look at infidelity but behind the humor lies a touching look at how Thorina survived this terrible time in her life and came into her own. I highly recommend this touching book.
