Enter for a Chance to Win a National Beer Day Party Kit

In honor of National Beer Day (April 7th), we’re pleased to feature Jeff Alworth, the author of our brand-new Beer Tasting Tool Kit. Jeff is also the blogger behind Beervana, where he has been writing about fine brews since 2006. Please join us in raising a glass to Jeff.

Flavor is easy, right? Put something into your mouth, chew or swish, and taste. But what goes into this thing we call flavor? Neuroscientists have identified a whole raft of elements that create flavor, from taste and aroma to the way food feels (we have pressure sensors in our mouth), to things happening in our brains like mood and memories. All get fused together when we put something in our mouths. With beer, much of what influences our perception have to do with cues we pick up long before we take the first sip.

Blind tasting is one of the most powerful tools we have to understand beer. Remove those cues given to you by a bottle of beer—the name of the brewery, the style, the cost of the bottle, the design on the label—you are left with only what your senses can tell you. With no cheats available, you have to immerse yourself in the aromas, flavors, and textures of the beer. This heightens experience and allows you to really get to know your beer. With experience, you’ll begin to identify flavors that come from hops, malt, and fermentation processes. You’ll learn what characterizes style and what makes beers different. Most importantly, you’ll begin to discover which beers you like and why that’s so.

Everything you need to conduct a tasting is included in The Beer Tasting Toolkit: handy numbered sacks that accommodate everything from a stubby to a 750 ml bottle, tasting notepads, a short-hand guide with key aroma and flavor terms, and a 48-page booklet that describes elements of flavor, beer styles, and how to conduct a tasting. There are tips about which beers to include in your tasting as well as suggestions for food and beer pairings.

All you need to do is add the beer.

    mmmmmm……….beer! Woo hoo!

  • Dawn April 4, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I would not consider myself to be a big beer fanatic, but my husband definitely is. He plans family vacations so that they coincide with the local brewery tours of that area.

Would love to throw a Beer Tasting Bash with my friends with this kit! I love trying new drinks.

I'm the world's biggest beer fanatic because I want to get married at the Rogue hops farm in Oregon.

  • Aurora April 4, 2012 at 2:30 pm

My boyfriend and I would totally dig this. Why are we fanatics? Because we skip the museums and take the brewery tours instead!

This is just what I need!! I have already been planning my own beer tasting/birthday party for mid-April, affectionately call "Oinks and Hops." Most beer parties I've seen online have been geared towards guys but ladies like me love beer too!! My favorite beers are microbrews, like Half Moon Bay's pilsner or Linden Street's chocolate stout. I'm even planning to grow my own hops!

Once it hits your lips it's so good!

I wouldn't mind trying to host a tasting party!

I LOVE this prize! Every year, my family has a party the day after Christmas. We host a blind beer tasting. Every person brings a couple bottles of 3 different beers based on a theme, such as holiday beers, German beers, Belgian beers, etc. Everyone wraps their bottle in aluminum foil and removes the cap. We have rating sheets that we use to rate each beer in a variety of categories and provide comments. It is an absolute blast and we find out what beers we really like without influence from brand or reputation. The winning beer is the one with the highest average which is revealed at the end of the evening. We've been doing this for about 10 years now and have an absolute blast every year! This kit would really help our party to be even more fun. 🙂

My friends drink wine and mixed drinks, but I am all about beer all the time. Sign me up!

  • Brooke April 4, 2012 at 8:28 pm

Yum! A good beer can turn around a bad day! Just thinking about one has improved this one! Cheers!!!

  • @super_sonja April 4, 2012 at 9:13 pm

I love beer and food and cider and wine… so much it could be considered gluttonous 🙂 One of my dream vacations is to do a bike-tour through Belgium visiting breweries. I've made homebrew and am always down for trying new ones. Love Beer!

  • Joey Nargizian April 4, 2012 at 9:50 pm

I absolutely love tasting beer, and I think I have friends. This could be a perfect combination for me!

  • Charlee April 4, 2012 at 10:02 pm

I am a choosy fan of beer! Only the best for my pint glass! I have even gotten in to beer brewing.

  • Lisa Larson April 5, 2012 at 4:15 am

I'm the world's biggest beer fan because no one looks forward to those hot summer afternoons with a nice cold beer more than me. Here in Wisconsin we have quite a few breweries. My favorite is Leinenkugels in Chippewa Falls. I would love to learn more about beer and host my own party. Pick me! Pick me!

  • Margaret April 5, 2012 at 10:03 am

Yes please! I'd have a Beer Tasting party for sure!

  • Sarah Skilling April 5, 2012 at 10:16 am

My friend is having a baby next month and I bet her husband would LOVE this as a "Baby Shower" gift. I mean, a beer tasting party would be the man's version of a baby shower…right?

  • Stephanie April 5, 2012 at 4:28 pm

My boyfriend and I met at a local Seattle beer spot and bonded over a mutual passion for IPA – Boundary Bay Brewery in particular. Four years later, we have tasted beer around the world, and still frequently visit the place where we met and bonded over IPA love. Beer is a part of our life and something that holds memories through the collection of pint glasses, growlers, hats, t-shirts, and the occasional headache. Prost, cheers and skol!

Thank you all for chiming in. We've randomly selected our winner. Please join us in saying congratulations to Lisa Larson.

We can't wait to hear all about your National Beer Day party!

Folks, it's a great pleasure to hear everyone chime in. One of the barriers to trying things like blind tastings are trepidation about getting it wrong or thinking you don't know enough about beer. I am delighted to see that there's no trepidation among this crowd!

    Happy tasting–
