Behind the Scenes: A Look at Our In-house Holiday Party Invitations

We have lots of fun traditions here at Chronicle Books HQ, but perhaps my favorite is our annual Design Department Holiday Pajama Party. As is fitting of a creative department, we take all the visual details of our party very seriously—from the perfect paper chains and the Chronicle Blue tree to the faux fireplace we build each year, complete with a mantel displaying photos from past years’ parties. But no one takes the party details more seriously than our department head-of-holiday-cheer, Design Director Michael Morris.

Michael creates a hilarious email invite each year solely for the enjoyment of our 20 in-house designers, but I couldn’t resist sharing a few of his most festive, snarky, and silly designs with you.

Design Department Party 2012

Rejected party themes apparently included “Santa’s Festival of Complaints” and “Santa’s Spittle Surprise.”

Design Department Party 2013

Vintage, cigarette-hawking Santa. “YES! Wear your Pajamas, lay on the floor and eat cookies until you are sick.”

Design Department Party 2015

Infographics include: “Least Favorite Candy Cane Flavors,” and “Holiday Carols That Just Didn’t Catch On.”

Luckily I didn’t end up with an “Easy-Shatter Ant Farm” at the gift swap this year. Happy Holidays from the Design Department at Chronicle Books!
