How to Survive Indie Bookstore Day

It’s almost here! April 27th is Independent Bookstore Day. It’s a daylong, nationwide celebration of the indie bookstores at the heart of our communities.

There’s so much to do that it can get overwhelming! We asked the experts from the Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht, to give us some tips on prepping for the biggest, most bookish day of the year.

Indie Bookstore Day Survival Checklist

1. Have a plan—identify the bookstores you intend to visit and plan your itinerary accordingly.

Start with the furthest bookstore away from your home and work your way back. Make sure to check opening and closing times! Check bookstore websites and social media for Indie Bookstore Day special events and add them to your schedule.

Bring a backpack so you can easily carry all your new books. You’ll also protect your haul from inclement weather and reduce your environmental impact by using your own bag.

Consider bringing a buddy in case things get overwhelming.

2. Be prepared—make a list of the books you intend to purchase during the day.

This will speed your visits along, although you will want to leave time for browsing. Set a budget and time limit for each store and adjust accordingly.

Some additional items to stash in your pack.

3. Stay hydrated and bring healthy snacks.

Sipping water and eating small snacks all day long rather than stopping for meals will allow you to trek from bookstore to bookstore with ease. Bring fruit, nuts, cheese, and bread, and a bottle of water.

4. Walk or bike to avoid traffic if possible, and to maximize your daily activity.

Or hop on public transit. If you have to drive, try to carpool.

A helpful tip you won’t get from Google Maps when planning your route.

5. Be in the moment.

Indie Bookstore Day is about supporting your community—the money you spend locally stays local! Talk to booksellers and other patrons for guidance and recommendations. The information you get via word of mouth can turn up literary treasures you never expected to find. It’s also a great day to meet authors and hear readings, so keep your eyes and ears open.

When you both reach for the last copy of a book.

6. Bring along your copy of THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO SURVIVAL HANDBOOK — you never know.

If you encounter wild animals or quicksand or find yourself lost, we want you to know what to do!
