Chronicle Books has an amazing opportunity for a Designer to join our Entertainment publishing group. Our designers are the keepers of Chronicle Books’ aesthetic, helping to produce some of the most innovative, well-designed titles available in the market. This role will manage multiple projects simultaneously, developing creative, appropriate, and marketable solutions and will guide complete projects, from covers to interiors, through the entire process, from conception through manufacture. Designers are also active members in focused publishing groups, and this role will be charged with helping the Entertainment publishing group achieve both its creative and financial goals.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

The position involves a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to the following primary design duties:


  • Design the covers and interiors for range of book, non-book, and book-plus publishing
  • Design across a diverse spectrum of subject areas, including but not limited to projects within the Entertainment publishing group
  • Scout and hire outside designers, illustrators, and photographers
  • Contract negotiations with freelancers
  • Art direct outside creative talent
  • Collaborate with and support project team members in house to realize a collective vision
  • Build and share information and expertise with fellow designers and other project team members


The position also requires the Designer to participate in the Entertainment publishing group, including but not limited to the following responsibilities:


  • Build, share, and voice expertise, not only as a designer but also as an authority on the publishing category’s consumer, marketplace, trends, and competition
  • Help develop and implement a vision and strategy for the Entertainment publishing group, with the goal of publishing distinctive and profitable titles
  • Originate and develop new ideas and new formats for publication



    • Art/design school graduate or university design/art major
    • 2-4 years of work experience in graphic design, including initial concept generation, through comps, presentations, and preparation of electronic pre-press files
    • An emphasis on, and experience in, print-based design is required
    • Experience in publication design is an advantage


    Successful candidates will possess strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. This entails teamwork, collaboration, an ability to mediate and negotiate with fellow colleagues and outside design resources, and an ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments simultaneously. Sound critical judgment skills toward the design of Chronicle Books’s publishing is essential. Knowledge of offset printing techniques, in particular color balance and how to achieve it, is important.


    Experience in a Macintosh computer environment and a command of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator CS5, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is required. Ability to prepare electronic files for press according to print specifications provided is also necessary.
