Chronicle Books is looking for an Executive Editor who will contribute to and help guide the work of the ART publishing group through stewardship of the gift product list and origination and acquisition of successful new gift formats and products. This role will have the opportunity to further enhance the distinctiveness, profitability, and reach of Chronicle Books’ publishing by championing the development of our new publishing lines.

Candidates should have five to seven years of editorial or product development experience and a demonstrated passion and ability for creating innovative, profitable, and timely gift products. In addition, candidates should have excellent quantitative and negotiation skills, leadership ability, and superior verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should be able to work independently and as an effective member of a highly collaborative team.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

Originate, acquire, develop, and manage titles that are distinctive and profitable and that speak directly to their end consumer, with a particular focus on innovative gift and stationery products in the Art publishing group, including such responsibilities as:


  • Pursue new collaborations with artists, authors, agents, and brands
  • Originate surprising and delightful projects with in-house ideas from across the company
  • Develop plans for new product development and successfully execute to launch unique products
  • Guide projects through the publishing process by working with design, production, as well as sales + marketing to create must-have, bestselling gifts
  • Negotiate deals with authors, agents, licensors, packagers, and overseas publishers, and maintain relationships with them and other publishing industry professionals
  • Research trends not only in publishing but in other relevant categories, to ensure the timeliness and distinctiveness of our publishing

    Steward Chronicle’s innovative gift product and format list editorially, including such responsibilities as:


  • Lead brainstorms, share tactics, and ensure alignment of gift product editorial efforts
  • Partner with craft leaders to lead and inspire gift product teams across all publishing groups and crafts in their creative explorations and financial success
  • Maximize profitability by engaging in category reviews, mining the backlist for opportunity, and reviewing overall financial performance
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the frank exchange of ideas and information with in-house team members. Nurture an atmosphere of mutual accountability and trust

    Manage assistant editor and editorial assistant in the Art publishing group, mentoring their careers and building the health of the editorial community as a whole.


    Be an ambassador for the Chronicle Books brand, informing not only our publishing but also all business relationships with our company values.


    Periodic Job Responsibilities:

    • Attend various meetings, such as Publishing Group meetings, departmental meetings, and present at launch, sales conference, and other ad hoc meetings
    • Attend/work trade shows as required
