Chronicle Books is excited to announce an opening for a Managing Editor in the Food and Lifestyle publishing group. The Managing Editor will oversee the coordination and implementation of publishing schedules for the group, ensuring house standards and quality are upheld and all titles are published in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Working with multiple book teams, the Managing Editor will have an acute knowledge of the status of each title at any given time and will be responsible for keeping projects on track and offering expertise and problem solving to this end. This position is responsible for proofreading galleys and proofs, copyediting manuscripts, driving active title management, chasing late deliverables, and monitoring and prioritizing the workflow of 60+ titles per year. The ideal candidate will possess a love of cooking and creativity and have the editorial chops to work on intensive cookbooks as well as the ability to think three-dimensionally and work nimbly on innovative gift and stationery formats.

Primary Job Responsibilities

 

  • Work with editorial, design, production, and marketing departments to ensure timely delivery of quality books and gift formats with an eye toward meeting sales materials deadlines and other key dates
  • Create, maintain, and troubleshoot schedules
  • Maintain seasonal masterlists and communicate any changes to the house
  • Manage project workflow from copyediting of manuscript through proofreading of bluelines and approval of advance copies
  • Proofread galleys, printer proofs, and other materials such as jacket copy and marketing materials, working collaboratively with editorial, design, and production
  • Facilitate publishing group meetings, creative meetings, and status meetings, capturing key publishing information and ensuring seasonal schedule dates and editorial concerns are addressed
  • Set and maintain house editorial standards
  • Review catalog galleys; sign off on title covers for catalogs
  • Coordinate creation of and review seasonal tipsheets and participate in seasonal launch meetings
  • Hire and evaluate freelance copyeditors (and proofreaders, as necessary) and oversee freelance costs, workflow, and database; ensure freelance budgets are met and editorial standards maintained

 

Qualifications

 

  • 3+ years of experience as managing editor or production editor
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
  • Extensive copyediting and proofreading experience; well-versed in Chicago Manual of Style
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and self-motivated with strong organizational and supervision skills
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), seamless follow-through, and multiple-title project management
  • Demonstrated experience working with deadlines and the ability to manage several tasks at once, both independently and with a wide variety of people in a team environment
