Chronicle Books seeks a dedicated and detail-minded junior book publishing professional with excellent copyediting and proofreading skills to join our Managing Editorial team. This is a full-time, entry-level position assisting the Managing Editorial group to expedite the publication of quality, timely, and cost-effective book and non-book products. The Managing Editorial Assistant will provide support on all Chronicle Books’ titles. Strong candidates are expected to possess specific publishing experience, demonstrating their copyediting, grammar and proofreading skills and applying the Chicago Manual of Style.

Primary Job Responsibilities:


 

  • Proofreading and copyediting of galleys, printers' color proofs, and bluelines, plus other materials such as jacket copy and sales & marketing copy, ensuring accurate corrections are made in a timely and efficient manner for a wide range of books and formats
  • Hire and evaluate freelance proofreaders and indexers, monitor schedules and act as primary point person
  • Review edited and proofread materials—includes working closely with the editors and in-house design and production departments
  • Make editorial style decisions as questions arise in both manuscripts and galleys, maintaining Chronicle Books’ editorial standards
  • Maintain project schedules
  • Set up new books, formats, and ebooks in the production management system
  • General clerical support for the Managing Editorial department

 

Qualifications

  • BA in English or equivalent
  • Prior publishing experience; professional internships and completion of copyediting, grammar and proofreading classes are acceptable
  • Demonstrated proofreading experience, strong grammar skills, and a working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style are necessary
  • Strong organizational skills, experience in working with deadlines, and the ability to handle several tasks at once are required abilities
  • Self-motivated and reliable, with exceptional communication skills, and a strong work ethic orientated towards collaboration are necessary to be successful
  • Word and Excel for Windows knowledge
