ENERGY THAT IS ALL AROUND was created to accompany the art exhibition of the same title first shown at San Francisco Art Institute in 2013 and now being shown at Grey Gallery at New York University in New York. The exhibition features early and formative works by five artists—Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, and Ruby Neri—who began their careers in San Francisco's Mission District in the early 1990s and whose work, by the early aughts, had been identified and celebrated as the Mission School. It takes a focused and unprecedented look at an art movement that has garnered cult-like status over the last two decades, connecting works and ephemera produced at the beginning of the artists' careers with vibrant new work created for the show, with the aim of revealing how a 'school' forms and evolves. The book includes over 50 full-color images, including photographs, individual pieces, and installation views of the exhibition, and features essays by exhibition curator Natasha Boas, Jack Hanley, Glen Helfand, Kevin Killian, Hesse McGraw, Dina Pugh, and Renny Pritikin.
