Chronicle Books seeks a friendly and detail-oriented Receptionist to join our team. The Receptionist is the primary contact for all callers and visitors to Chronicle Books and is responsible for all activities involved in the operation of the Front Desk, including retail sales, customer service, and oversight of the lobby bookstore. The Receptionist also provides as-needed administrative support for various departments and assists with a wide variety of projects. We’re a distinctive company, and we seek an equally distinctive individual to provide an inviting and professional first impression. Prior experience in retail book sales or reception is a plus.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Run the reception desk, answering and routing phone calls and being helpful and courteous to all callers, employees and guests
  • Run the lobby retail store, providing customer service, stocking merchandise and placing book orders, ringing in sales and reconciling cash and receipts, etc.
  • Greet guests and announce their arrival
  • Provide online customer service via ZenDesk
  • Receive incoming packages from messengers and notify recipients. Arrange for messenger service pick up and track packages if necessary
  • Maintain a general knowledge of who does what in the office, who is in and out of the office, where materials are available, etc.
  • Address or forward, as necessary, messages left during non-business hours
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the front desk area (including book displays, guest waiting area, etc.) and retail store
  • Manage the scheduling of conference room reservations and computer training
  • Maintain and update the company calendar
  • Keep phone lists, office maps and author address lists up-to-date
  • Address catalog and submission guideline requests
  • Provide administrative support for various executives and departmental projects as needed



  • Exceptional inter-personal skills and customer service savvy are required
  • Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, ZenDesk
  • Reliability, flexibility and unfailing good nature
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to problem solve without assistance
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to learn and remember things quickly are essential
  • Strong communication and computer skills are essential
