Chronicle Books is excited to announce an opening for a highly motivated salesperson with proven publishing sales experience, a track record of success, and ability to develop new business as required for selling to key accounts in the specialty market. The Sales Manager, Special Markets will have full responsibility and accountability for every aspect of key account management: forecasting, creating sales strategy, selling, follow up, and reaching or exceeding sales targets. This position will be charged with actively seeking to grow our business and market share and with expanding our breadth of representation in accounts while managing day-to day business, co-op, and other account specific promotions. The Sales Manager will be required to provide feedback and information from accounts to inform Chronicle Books’ publishing efforts. Finally, this position is charged with driving the continuing development and growth of Chronicle Books and our distribution clients’ sales in the specialty channel.

Job Responsibilities


This position’s time will be spent as follows:
  • 60% of time will be spent on existing account management
  • 20% of time on prospecting for, landing, and management of new business and accounts
  • 20% on communication, other related sales activity, and internal meetings and input

For both existing and new business, this position will handle all aspects of account management, including but not limited to the following:

  • Meet or exceed set sales targets
  • Track sales weekly at all accounts
  • Discuss creative merchandising ideas with accounts for better placement and more sales opportunity
  • Increase Chronicle Books exposure and relationships at all levels of the account’s organization
  • Increase number of SKUs at accounts over prior year (if existing account)
  • Work with all divisions of applicable accounts (books, stationery, home, outlet, online, catalog etc.)
  • Work with custom publishing team where possible to create exclusive product for accounts
  • Manage the business in a profitable way by controlling expenses, and review special handling charges on a regular basis
  • Communicate changes in the marketplace, changing discount/margin requirements, etc., so Chronicle Books can continue to offer effective and competitive terms in this channel
  • Consistent and regular CRM updates regarding new business prospecting activity
  • Set monthly goals and forecasts for accounts
  • Actively and aggressively sell both frontlist and backlist titles to account, taking care to target the right titles to the right account, and to look for every title specific opportunity
  • Conduct account business reviews where appropriate

  • New Business

    • Aggressively prospect for new accounts; meet or exceed goals for establishing new accounts in special markets
    • Consistently review dormant accounts for revival possibilities

    Communication and Internal Input

    • Provide seasonal title by title forecast for each account
    • Provide ongoing feedback to editorial and marketing about current and upcoming titles and projects
    • Provide competitive information from account: titles, promotions, terms, marketing

    The Sales Manager will also represent Chronicle Books at various trade shows or other events as needed.




    • Minimum of 3+ years account management experience in book or gift industry
    • Demonstrated success in managing and growing business and identifying new business opportunities
    • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, etc.
    • Experience with Sales Force a plus
    • Travel required
