Chronicle Books is looking for an experienced Subrights Manager with an interest in illustrated publishing, negotiation, and building relationships with publishers across the globe. The Subsidiary Rights Manager directly manages Subsidiary Rights efforts throughout the world for Chronicle Books. This position is responsible for increasing Rights sales and Chronicle’s global presence through strategic planning, relationship development and tactical negotiations. The Subsidiary Rights Manager will broaden the scope of where one can find Chronicle Books while being responsible for profitability and increasing revenues.

Job Responsibilities


  • Manage Subsidiary Rights initiatives with a mind toward ensuring best possible profits and exceeding Sales Goals in each publishing division
  • Manage Subsidiary Rights segment of the financials, including budgeting, forecasting and month-end reconciliation
  • Conduct Subsidiary Rights negotiations daily, always pressing for most profitable co-edition print runs, competitive advances and obtaining advertising and marketing plans from foreign publishers
  • Extend Chronicle Books customer base by building and maintaining relationships with the best possible partners in each publishing category
  • Create new business opportunities by capitalizing on unrealized opportunities and prospecting in untapped markets
  • Work extensively with editorial department to address and coordinate content, design, and scheduling issues impacting Foreign sales opportunities and processes
  • Represent Chronicle Books at most foreign rights fairs (i.e., Frankfurt, London and Bologna Book Fairs.)
  • Provide ongoing feedback to both Editorial and Sales & Marketing departments regarding international publishing trends and Foreign Rights potential for each publishing division’s list
  • Coordinate Foreign submissions process with Subsidiary Rights Assistant
  • Manage sales into Book Clubs and Book Fairs, ensuring continued placement of popular series and new titles to exceed Sales Goals




  • 3+ years of Foreign or subsidiary rights experience in book publishing
  • Demonstrated success in managing and growing subsidiary rights business
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the company effectively
  • Organized, detail-oriented and skilled at prioritizing workload
  • Ability to travel to foreign and domestic fairs
