Chronicle Books is excited to accept submissions for the 2013 Summer/Fall session of our Design Fellowship program. There are five fellowships available in our Publishing Design, Marketing Design, Children’s Design and Digital Media Design groups.
Required Application Materials
(for Publishing Design, Marketing Design and Children’s Design applicants)
- Statement of purpose, not exceeding one page
- Resumé
- Physical bound portfolio which includes:
- 10-12 examples of most recent graphic design work (student, personal and/or professional projects welcome)
- Does not exceed 11×17″
- Product shots rather than multiple loose materials
- All pages labeled with your name and the group you are applying to

PUBLISHING GROUP DESIGN FELLOWSHIP
Application Requirements:
All applicants for the Publishing Design Fellow position must have a strong interest in book, publication, or packaging design along with a background in graphic design.
Required Education:
Graduated with an accredited, undergraduate or graduate degree in design within the past 24 months. Design candidates only.
Required Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of the Adobe Suite and Microsoft Word
- Communication skills, written and verbal, in English
- Prioritization, multitasking, and organization skills
- Interpersonal, collaborative skills
- Understanding of typography
- Ability to flow text in long form
- Knowledge of offset printing techniques, photography skills, illustration skills, calligraphy, and package design are a plus, but not required
MARKETING GROUP DESIGN FELLOWSHIP
Application Requirements:
All applicants for the Publishing Design Fellow position must have a strong interest in book, publication, or packaging design along with a background in graphic design.
Required Education:
Graduated with an accredited, undergraduate or graduate degree in design within the past 24 months. Design candidates only.

All applicants for the Children’s Group Design Fellow position must have a strong interest in book, publication, or packaging design along with a background in graphic design.

Graduated with an accredited, undergraduate or graduate degree in design within the past 24 months. Design candidates only.

- Strong working knowledge of the Adobe Suite and Microsoft Word

DIGITAL MEDIA FELLOWSHIP
Application Requirements:
All applicants for the Digital Media Fellow position must have an interest in publishing design, mobile technology, and interaction design centered around tablet OS devices. Applicants should also have a comfortable working knowledge of Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Required Education:
Graduated with an accredited, undergraduate or graduate degree in design within the past 24 months. Design and digital media candidates only.
Required Skills:
- Strong working knowledge of the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver) and Microsoft Office
- Understanding of typography
- Eagerness to learn old/new software
- HTML, CSS and Javascript
- Understanding of and interest in UX/UI design
- Familiarity with Terminal, FTP clients, zipping and unzipping files, Quark and running scripts
- Knowledge of or interest in photography, illustration, calligraphy, and package design is a plus, but not required
