Editorial Fellowships

We offer fellowship opportunities with our Editorial teams in each of our publishing categories. Fellows will have a variety of responsibilities which may include evaluating manuscripts, aiding in submissions, sorting and sending out decline notices as needed, drafting copy and acquisition materials, preparing sales materials, performing competitive research, helping with mailings, attending meetings, participating in brainstorming, and handling other administrative tasks.

All Fellows must be highly organized, flexible, and able to effectively multitask. Editorial or copywriting experience is a plus.

The Basics:

  • Full-time, non-exempt, 37.5 hours per week, paid $21.64 per hour

  • Full benefits including medical, vision, and dental

  • 80 hours vacation time and 80 hours sick time (in addition to company holiday closure dates)

  • Projected Start Date: June 2, 2026

  • Projected End Date: May 27th, 2027

We are offering three opportunities in our Editorial departments:

Food & Lifestyle
Fellows assisting the Food & Lifestyle editors will work on cookbooks and cocktail books, as well as books and formats on the topics of home, style, flowers, crafts, fitness, relationships, mind/body/spirit, and personal growth.

Arts & Entertainment
Fellows assisting the Arts & Entertainment editors will work on publishing in the categories of pop culture, art, photography, how-to creativity, humor, pets, trivia, travel, illustrated classics, and sex, creating beautiful books as well as clever gifts and stationery.

Children’s
Fellows assisting the Children’s editors will work on books for readers up to 18 years old, including board books, picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and middle grade titles, as well as novelty items, games, and journals.

Fellows will follow a hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up
to 4 days per week in our San Francisco office. Due to the high level of interest in these
roles, we will only be able to contact candidates we are considering placing, and we will
not be able to review general requests for Fellowships (specify your editorial department
of interest, please).

Design Fellowships


Chronicle Books offers three graphic design fellowship opportunities within our Design Department:

  • The Children's Books and Gift Graphic Design Fellowship focuses on books and gifts for babies, children and young adults. Book formats might include board books, novelty books, picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels. Gifts might include puzzles, kids games, and specialty packaging.
  • The Books and Gift Fellowship focuses on books and gifts for an adult audience. Book content ranges from Art, Food, Lifestyle, and Entertainment (pop culture, music, media, humor, pets, etc). Gifts might include stationery, puzzles, products, and specialty packaging. 
  • The Brand Fellow will have the opportunity to work with the Brand Design team to create innovative, well-designed brand and marketing materials in keeping with the Chronicle Books aesthetic. This role has a focus on digital and online materials but does include some print materials. Primary duties are to support the in-house designers and manage multiple projects simultaneously, developing creative, appropriate design solutions for online promotions for our website and across all social media and trade channels.

All Books & Gift Fellows will collaborate with a range of designers within our 20-person department; gain exposure to Chronicle Books editors and production coordinators; and have the opportunity to engage with freelance illustrators, photographers, and artists. All positions become integral team members of our Department and will conclude their experience with wonderful additions to their portfolio, as well as an understanding of the publishing industry.

The Brand Fellow will collaborate with a range of marketing and social media managers, attend biweekly marketing staff meetings and monthly sales and marketing meetings. They will become an integral part of the Brand Design team and conclude their experience with a wide range of digital and printed marketing and branding projects, as well as an understanding of marketing strategy and the publishing industry.

Fellowships are hourly, full-time paid positions for approximately 12-months and will include health benefits and paid time off. These positions are based in our San Francisco office.
