Marketing Manager, Food and Lifestyle Publishing

Chronicle Books is looking for a Marketing Manager for our Food and Lifestyle category. This hands-on role will provide overall strategic direction for Food and Lifestyle marketing and publicity and will create and implement marketing plans for all category titles and digital product launches with the goal of increasing sales, increasing marketplace visibility, and making Chronicle Books a marketing leader in Food and Lifestyle publishing. This role will work closely and effectively with the Food and Lifestyle publishing group to develop the list, communicate with sales, and provide marketing expertise throughout the publication process. Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience and ability in creating a marketing and publicity strategy and marketing plans that are executable, represent an astute use of resources and a good return on investment, and that build sales.


The Marketing Manager will also manage and partner with the Food and Lifestyle Publicist to provide guidance, feedback, and mentoring as needed and will assist in managing the publicity budget, streamlining processes, and creating efficiencies whenever possible.



Responsible for day-to-day and strategic marketing plans for the assigned titles and categories, with the objective of increasing sales, gaining brand visibility, and growing market share. Partner with the publicist to ensure publicity plans are aligned with the overall objectives and strategies for the category and achieve the same objectives.


Marketing plans include (but are not limited to): creating robust online marketing campaigns, advertising (trade and consumer), assisting sales with the planning of coop spending, creating custom promotions and promotional items, trade and consumer shows where appropriate, and creating partnerships with other parties and internally with publicity and editorial to uncover and create opportunities to promote and sell the assigned titles or titles in the assigned categories.


Publicity plans include (but not limited to): author tours, events, media relations, review mailings, coverage, excerpts and partnerships. Online responsibilities include social media, videos, podcasts, blog and consumer outreach on and key category websites to build online presence, word of mouth and community.


  • Responsible for working closely with the publicists, Online Marketing team, the Publishing Group, and Sales to achieve goals.
  • Work closely with editors and the Publishing Group to understand and contribute to their ideas and vision for their titles, and to keep them informed on marketing efforts. • Be a category “champion”—responsible for gathering and communication of information regarding the titles and the category to help improve and drive sales efforts and results.
  • Work with Marketing Communications department, create project briefs and oversee design and production of all marketing materials and projects related to title and category promotion.
  • Plan and oversee the successful implementation of all trade and consumer advertising for the titles in the assigned categories (or for category/brand advertising, as applicable).
  • Responsible for tracking and managing the marketing and publicity (with the publicist) expenses for the assigned titles and category, taking care to set appropriate budgets, communicate them, and not exceed them.
  • Communicate marketing plans to the International group in a timely fashion and offer help and advice.
  • Integrate all product from all Chronicle divisions, including Distribution, wherever appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with sales account managers to understand their accounts’ business, goals, and initiatives.
  • Work with sales account managers to help plan co-op spending as well as to create specific account-by-account marketing plans and preorder campaigns and strategies. Assist in building new business opportunities. • Provide others with market information on the assigned categories and utilize this information to inform marketing plans as well as editorial meetings.
  • Have a strong understanding of the key accounts for the assigned categories.
  • Oversee consumer research and work closely with the Publishing Group to learn as much as possible about the end consumer.
  • Additional responsibilities within the Publishing Group includes: assisting in determining print runs, sales material needs, communication in and out of the Publishing Group with sales, publicity, rest of company (as requested), reviewing flap and book copy, participation in seasonal and annual reviews of the publishing list, marketing and sales results.
  • Partner with the Online Marketing team to develop and execute online and social media campaigns for category titles and promote all new digital products in the categories, contribute to the blog, utilize and engage social media as part of other marketing and publicity plans.
  • Work closely with authors to communicate marketing and publicity plans, activate their audience, and partner with them on the successful launch of their books.



  • A minimum of 5 years marketing experience, preferably in book publishing.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Must be organized and detailed oriented.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the company and with outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Requires self-direction, tact, diplomacy and a clear, courteous and professional manner when dealing with the public.
