Chronicle Books is looking for a Children’s Publishing Designer to help produce some of the most innovative and well-designed titles in the market, by guiding complete projects from conception through manufacture. The Designer will develop appropriate, and marketable solutions, and they will be active members in focused publishing groups with an aim to achieve both creative and financial goals.
In this role, the Designer will hire outside illustrators, designers, and photographers, and they will art direct outside creative talent, particularly illustrators. Collaboration with Editorial, Production, and Marketing teams will part of the job as will preparing Children’s sales materials for Spring and Fall Book Clubs and book fairs. The Designer will design a range of book and non-book publishing across a diverse spectrum of subject areas within the Children’s publishing group, and for other categories, as needed. Building, sharing, and voicing expertise as a Designer and as an authority on the publishing category’s consumer, marketplace, trends, and competition will be essential. This is your chance to help develop and implement a vision and strategy for the Children’s publishing group by originating and developing new ideas and new formats for publication.
A successful applicant will need to be an art/design school graduate or university design/art major with at least 2 years of work experience in graphic design. Your background should include initial concept generation, through comps, presentations, and preparation of electronic pre-press files. A focus on print-based design is required, with a preferred emphasis on publication design and product design. Experience in a Macintosh environment with a command of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is needed. You should have the ability to prepare files for press according to print specifications, along with a knowledge of offset printing techniques, especially color balance. Be prepared with portfolio pieces that demonstrate an appropriate sensibility for, and interest in, children’s design. Sound critical judgment skills toward the design of Chronicle’s publishing are essential.
