Senior Designer, Children's
Chronicle Books is seeking a San Francisco or New York City-based Senior Designer, Children's, to produce some of the most innovative, well-designed titles available in the market. Senior Designers manage multiple projects simultaneously, developing creative, appropriate, and marketable solutions. They guide complete projects, from covers to interiors, and from conception through manufacture. They are also active members in focused publishing groups, charged with helping their groups to achieve both creative and financial goals. A passionate Senior Designer should come with broad visual aesthetics, proven ability to design Children’s products, commercial instincts, and a collaborative point of view.
The Senior Designer will design books, non-books, and book-plus publishing within the Children's group. They will source outside designers, art direct, and collaborate with editorial, production, and marketing teams. In addition, they will project manage Children's sales materials, and they will build and share information and expertise with fellow designers. The nature of this role also requires the Senior Designer to participate in the Children's publishing group.
Applicants should have at least 6 years experience in graphic design, including initial concept generation, through comps, presentations, and preparation of electronic pre-press files. A focus on print-based design is required, as is experience in a Macintosh environment and a command of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. You will need an ability to prepare files for press according to print specifications, and knowledge of offset printing techniques, in particular color balance and how to achieve it, is important. Please present portfolio pieces that demonstrate an appropriate sensibility for and interest in children’s design. Publication design and product design are preferred.
