From the Design Desk: Stationery-Inspired Style

Back in February, when the streets of New York were bustling with über stylish magazine editors and stylists running from one show to the next at New York Fashion week, I was working on my own stylish mission: take the hottest pattern and palette trends from runways and turn them into printed journals.

It wasn’t simple, but it was a lot of fun. First we formed a panel of fashion advisors before New York Fashion Week. We asked our super stylish friends at Coquette, ModCloth, and a few other top secret sources to watch the runways and tell us the trends they liked.

When the week was over, we gathered together to go over the prints and colors that caught our eyes. The meeting room was full of runway photos and email printouts from our advisors. The electric Yves Klein blue was a trend that excited everyone. We also noticed lots of neutrals worn with a hit of bright hot color like crimson red, neon yellow, or emerald green. And plaid. Plaid was everywhere. Plaid has been popular for awhile, but it’s not going away anytime soon. Another pattern trend to note was dots. Dots weren’t as universal as plaid, but they are a fresh rising star.

We processed all these observation and…voila! This is the set of journals we made inspired by New York 2011 Fall/Winter collections! It’s going to be released in October, just in time to pair with your favorite Fall clothes.

Seeing an advance copy of journals in my hands, I couldn’t help but think about the outfits that I would wear to match these little guys. Fashion and stationery—the inspiration goes both ways. So here it is. My dream outfits inspired by these three journals!

Journal No1. For this bright buffalo plaid journal, I think I want to sport the bold blue and red color combo head to toe. It’s electric. It’s fun. I think the chic version of the outfit is totally office appropriate.

Journal No2. With this quieter blue plaid journal, I want to wear a plaid with layers of many different shades of blues. An oversized cozy boyfriend flannel plaid shirt will be a casual alternative to the plaid shirt dress. I think adding a hit of neon yellow will be really fun with this kind of dark blue buffalo plaid.

Journal No3. For this chic journal with small red dots, I thought this DKNY dress that I saw on Miss Tyler at Who What Wear was perfect. I’d add a touch of vintage with a purse like this one that I saw at ModCloth. Reversing the colors and wearing a romantic red dress with black accessories would also be cute.

Good luck!
